MSI ULTRA ARU or AR + P4 1.8a or P4 1.6????

AMD readers don't respond! I already have an AMD machine I need this for sanity sake.

Trying to build a system with the MSI 845 ULTRA mobo and a P4. I would like to decide between a P4 1.6 or maybe even the P4 1.8a. Is the Northwood worth the extra 50 bucks? Will it work with the mobo? Finally what's the difference between the ULTRA ARU and AR?

cost would be approximately (from NEWEGG)
(retail)
Intel Pentium 4 1.8A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus $208.00 + $7
or
INTEL PENTIUM 4 1.6GHz 400MHz SOCKET 478 PROCESSOR
$145.00 + $7

MSI 845 Ultra-AR (MS-6398 6398-030) INTEL 845 P4 DDR 400MHz Socket 478 ATX MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL $125.00 + $5
or
MSI 845 Ultra-ARU (MS-6398 v1.0 6398-010) Intel 845 P4 DDR **USB 2.0 & ATA-133** Socket 478 ATX MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL
$136.00 + $8

$282 to $359 would be the price range if all combinations worked.

Information to this would be appreciated. Better prices from another reputable seller, info on the northwood performance, and info on the different motherboard models. I do want the full featured motherboard with RAID but I haven't looked to see what the cheaper model has yet.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks guys,

I wanted to get this topic out on both forums since it applies to both. It's the interesting remark about the +PC2400 memory that actually made it worth while to post in both.

I've decided on looking for the 1.6A and if I can't I'll get the 1.8A.

As far as the MSI is concerned it would be the ARU unless I do more research and see the TITAN DDR 8IRXP from Gigabyte is really worth the 50 bucks extra.

One thing though, I'll be putting in 266 DDR memory from Crucial that I have two sticks of 256MB. I'll grab a stick from my AMD EPOX 8K7A + 1.2 266 Thunderbird system for this one temporarily. Will this work or do I really need to invest in the +PC2400 ram? I'm a little unsure about the memory that should go best with this system. I'm going for performance but blowing too much money is on my mind as well.

Let me know what you guys think.

Since the Northwoods are out now, I would not buy a regular Pentium 4, I'd go for the 1.8 northwood, you can easily overclock it to 2.0/2.2Ghz without even breaking a sweat.

If you wanna save the extra 50 bucks get a 1.6 northwood, but I think it's worth it to get the 1.8.

the 8IRXP allows cpu, ddr, agp voltage modifactions

also you get 6 pci , Lan

all the MSI's ive seen either get RMA'd or just dont work.

GIGABYTE GA-8IRXP BUNDLE W/ COOLING FAN & (INTEL PENTIUM 4 1.8AG - 478; NO MEMORY; NO TESTING) $365.00

Mwave

MSI 845 ULTRA-AR Motherboard Specs BUNDLE W/ RETAILED (INTEL PENTIUM 4 1.8AG - 478; NO MEMORY; NO TESTING) $340.00

the extra 25.00 isnt that much for what you get.

other than the cpu being more expensive at mwave teh board is alot chaeper.

google and newegg tried to pricematch mwave but upped their prices as usual
