MSI or IWill slotket?

Ok, here's the deal. A friend of mine needs a machine built for him really bad to get his autocad work done and doesn't have a whole lot to spend. So, I offered him this Supermicro PIIISED motherboard that I never use (just sits on a shelf collecting dust). The only problem is that it's one of the few i810E boards that uses a Slot-1 connector and I need a Slotket adapter to get this Celeron 633 working in it (while crossing my fingers that this board will actually support an .18u Celeron).

Honestly, I've never worked with a slotket before so I would like some opinions on the MSI and IWill slotkets, and which would work best in my situation. Thanks!

MSI is 1/3 the cost and equally as reliable. However, I'm not completely sure that the MSI has "voltage regulation" which is needed to work on some motherboards. The IWill has voltage regulation. So, if you have $30, go for the IWill. Many people said the Abit BH6 doesn't support .18u processors, and I got the MSI which probably doesn't have voltage regulation, and it's running rock solid. Bah.. go with your gut instinct 🙂

Well, I don't mind spending the extra $10 if the IWill is a better slotket. I just need something that works. As stated above, the board is a Supermicro, not an Abit. I'm just hoping that the board has BIOS support (or at least a new flash ROM on the website) for a .18u Celeron.

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming guys! 🙂

I have an MSI slotket running my PIII 700@933. I've used them before and have never had any problems. The one aspect that does make MSI rather important in some instances is that it is shorter than some others (Tekram, for example) so it will fit in nearly all cases. I had the InWin A500, and the Tekram slotket bumped into the power supply. :Q

My PIII is running at default voltage so I don't know about adjusting voltage on it.

I have MSI slocket, for my 700@1Ghz+,
using asus p3v4x.

The only problem is, it can't report correct
temp (not sure if this is problem with slocket though).

The MSI seems to be the favorite around here. I have n IWILL & have been extremely pleased with it... Until my ArctiCooler showed up last week. Damned capacitors are too close to the socket, & won't allow the AC to connect properly.

I have an MSI on the way from googlegear, should get here today or tomorrow.

Yeah, I think I'll grab that MSI because I can already see that room will be a problem, as the Slot-1 connector on this board is less than an inch away from the bottom of the PSU. Thanks you guys.

Just to let you know that the MSI doesnt take any less room than the Iwill. I like the Iwill because:
  • Well made SECC1 catridge style case, easy to plug in
  • Big ass capacitors (hell those MSI ones were small)
  • Adequate space between the socket and the jumpers(oppose to little room on the MSI)
I own both, so Im very familiar with them. Neither of the two has voltage regulations, only the newer Iwill SlocketIII has it, but nowhere to be found.

Got my MSI today. Couple of observations:

- The ArctiCooler was just as much a pain in the ass to install on this one as it was the IWILL. I had to shave the lugs on BOTH sides with a razor blade to get the ArctiCooler's clips to fit under them.
- The jumper block is WAY too close to the socket, as LXi mentioned.
- The slot 1 retention mechanism is nowhere NEAR the level of the IWILL. When the IWILL locks into place, it's not going ANYWHERE. Even with a PEP66 installed.

Other than those gripes, the MSI performs as well as the IWILL for half the cost. No better, no worse, from what I can tell thus far. Running the same speed, same voltage, & roughly the same temperature as the IWILL did. I'll probably revert to the IWILL, though I'll have to decide between a quiet(er) computer at 966 MHz/45ºC, or a loud 1 GHz machine at 37ºC.

Decisions, decisions, decisions...
