I think it was because the MSI boards were super buggy and they found a hardware fix for this and they're fixing it for free. If this is the case then I'll stop bashing MSI!

Edit: Nope. They're giving you a Slot bracket thing so that:
1) More airflow for your cards
2) Faster in SLI

Pretty cool if you ask me. Dunno why they won't just give the slot bracket and you install it yourself...

This:
2. Customers will be responsible for the return shipping charge/insurance, and MSI will ship back the "re-energized" motherboard(s) to the user using Standard Ground Shipping.
Makes it sound like you send the BOARD to them and they do some stuff.

Skiguy411: I don't see why they would do it for non-SLI boards. It's just a chunk of hardware that helps video cards get more ventilation in SLI mode. It's stupid to have that on a non-SLI board.

The Pentium Guy: When MSI says it "fastens the SLI bridge" I'm thinking "fasten" as in "connect" or "reinforce" in a physical sense, not as in "speed up". This upgrade is basically sticking a vent in between the two video cards so it gets more airflow and nothing else.

Why would you have to send back the entire motherboard then?

Here is their response :

Hi Chris,

Yes, this free "upgrade" offer is only for the MSI K8N Neo4 SLI
motherboard users.

MSI thinks of "customer service" in different way. As you know that new
technologies evolve so quickly, and we receive calls from users that
they want to know if their motherboards are ready for the new AMD
Athloon X2 dual-core processors and can take the latest GeForce 7800GTX
VGA card. You probably heard from some review sites saying that users
just need a BIOS update in order for their motherboards to work with any
Athlon X2 processors. However, we take a further step to make sure the
"upgrade" path is as smooth as possible to our customers.

Basically, we will refresh the BIOS for any registered user, test the
board and our technical staff will examine the parts to make sure
everything is in good conditions - it's like a car company is offering
its customers a free A/C check up during the summer. We want to show
our customers that we are standing behind the quality of our products
and get to know them.

This offer is not a requirement to all the two qualifying motherboard
users - ex. if you do not have two SLI ready VGA cards installed, then
you will not need the slot bracket. Hope this email answers your
questions.

Sincerely,

MSI Marketing

That's pretty awesome ;). Excellent customer support. But then again, they're doing this because the 7800GTX's wont fit .... haha. Hey! It's better than nothing.
