i recently came across a stripped msi mega 651. it had no heatsink/fan in it. does anyone know if this is an oem only type thing, or can i use a standard s478?

i didnt know whether to put this here or in SFF...

I'd imagine a standard s478 would fit depending on clearance...

Yeah, lots of those mini systems have proprietary cooling solutions - but IDK on that one. It is usually the shoebox size. The MSI takes a standard microATX mobo so you could probably use a standard HSF if you watch your clearances.

Well not exactly true....I've got three of them. It uses a proprietary mounting system, and you'll have to mod something to get it to fit. The four MB mount holes for the CPU heatsink can be used with some brass stand-offs. Now the hard part.....finding something to fit. 70mm wide is the maximum size you'll get to fit....anything wider hits the PSU and the NB on the other side. And it cannot be very tall, otherwise it will hit the CD drive.

I've modded five of these with different heatsinks. An Alpha 8942 can be made to fit with some trimming. It's a neat setup when the cooling problem is solved......but it's a tough project. The OEM HSF is a P.O.S.

MEGA with Mantatten HSF

thanks blue. i found an original hs/f on ebay for like $7. im gonna get it, try it out. if its a problem, ill have to ask you some more questions.
