MSI K8N Neo4 Ultra Northbridge Fan

anyone try to replace it with a different fan? or is it quiet for you?

which fans/heatsinks work on this motherboard?

i saw in other thread you said its louder then your 120mm fans?

that is nuts dude. mine isnt loud at all but i did see it runs at like 6000rpm.

have you tried hooking it to a fan controller and turning it wayyy down.

hmmm i guess i'll have to buy a fan controller

I've put a Zalman NB cooler (the blue one). However, I've only got an Asus X300 there and so they coexist together, but it's still a bit of a tight squeeze. Luckily, the Zalman can be adjusted a little. There's about 3/4mm of clearance between the two.

Running at the lowest volts (1.5v), it still gets very hot. I don't know the temperature. Whacking up the setting to 1.8v, it gets too hot to touch!

My fan is loud as well. Can it be disabled without causing problems?

I highly doubt that since some are having problems with the passive Zalman not cooling enough without SOME airflow through it. Try slowing the fan down a little through software like Speedfan. Not sure if software will work for the chipset fan. If it doesn't you can try some sort of fan controller.

I had an idea about using the Zalman 32J passive cooler as a substitute and slapping a 40mm fan on top of it, but whether it would fit entirely depends on the length/width of your vidcard and its cooler. Zalman did make the mounts for the HS highly adjustable though. The 32J is 37x37mm so you could probably fix a 40mm fan to it using screws that go a little way down between the heatsink fins. Sunon makes a cute little 40mm fan that is only 28.5 dB, not very loud. If my MB's stock HSF is too loud and my vid card's HSF isn't blatantly in the way (it might be) I may try it out.

Just installed Speedfan and it looks as if my NB fan is running at 7000 - 7300 rpm. I can't get the software to adjust the fan speed. The CPU fan is only around 3100 rpm. 7000 rpm just seems really high.

Just got my MSI Neo4 Ultra rig together. The chipset fan does seem a bit noisy, but then again it runs at over 7300rpm. I noticed in Nvidia nTune and MSI CoreCenter there is no reading coming up for the northbridge/chipset temperature, has anyone else had this problem?

Just installed a Zalman Fanmate 2 fan controller and lowered the NB fan speed so see what worked best. It is almost silent at 3000 - 3500 rpm. Monitored the NB temp and it's consistently 10 - 18 C.

hmm, is that a good temp for NB? i would think so . . .

10 - 18C? Thats 50F to 64F! Do you keep your PC in the garage or something?

I have the same problem, if you know of a fix, do let me know

Hopefully the next BIOS release will cure the problem.

or maybe a new heatsink could go on it

neither Zalman nor MSI has emailed me back

anyone else have any luck?

i've attatched a zalman fanmate to the northbridge cooler fan and it lowers the rpm down to about 3k. its much quieter now and the temp seems pretty much unchanged. the ambient case temp is around 35, which is decent, to start with.

i wish they'd fix the northbridge temperature reading.

I also have this board, and I'm shooting for a really quiet computer. I turned the northbridge fan down to about 4000 rpm, but I still want to know the temp. I think I'm going to use an infrared gun to try and calibrate the chip. If anybody has any other good ideas, tell me!
