For some reason, the chipset fan on my motherboard keeps spinning REALLY fast, then slows down for a few seconds, then speeds up again. It's normally pretty quiet and I don't really hear it over the other fans in my system. But tonight, my computer got really loud, and I didn't know why, it was my mobo fan spinning at 4800+ RPM. I never really payed attention, before, but I don't think it ever really went that fast. Anyone know why the fan would speed up? I'm thinking because of the mobo heating up, but what would cause it to heat up?
My computer has been on for about 8 hours (it's been on for longer periods and this never happened before). It was idle for a few hours, and most of the stuff I'm diong is using Firfox, AIM, and watching DVD movies and recorded TV shows.

I am by far an expert on this board but it could be the 'cool and quiet' feature. It can be enabled in the bios in the cell menu. Or if you have the "CoreCentre" software installed you can enable/disable it from there. The sw is available on the msi cd. hope it helps

I though cool & quiet was just for the CPU fan, but when I get home I'll check it out.
Let me know if anyone else has any info or suggestions.

Bump, anyone have any other suggestions on how to quiet down the mobo chipset fan?

That chipset fan does tend to get loud. I connected mine to an external fan controller and turned the fan speed down as far as it can go. I haven't had any problems running it this way.

There have also been widespread reports of there not being enough thermal paste between the chipset and fan assembly. A lot of people have removed the fan and reapplied their own Arctic Silver, although I have not tried this yet.

If you install MSI's CoreCenter program and click on "CoreCenter" right at the top it gives you the option to either enable Cool'n'Quiet or manually set the fan speeds for both the cpu and chipset fan.
