Hey everyone,

Just received my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (Socket 939) and Athlon64 3500+. I am currently using the stock HSF but have been getting outrageous temperature readings with this board.

Currently my CPU Temp. is 129°F (54°C) but has been as high as 141°F (59-61°C). I have read on ANANDTECH Forums and MSI's Tech Support Forums that many people are having this problem and that it is a BIOS related issue. I contacted the MSI Tech Support and this is what they stated :

The issue did not seen on this model. Please do physically touching the HSF on the processor to see if it?s warm on touch then you can know weather the readout is true or not, thanks.

Sincerely,

I have done as they stated and physically touched the HSF and it does not feel warm and the CPU fan is running at 3000 + RPM. So, I do not believe that my temperatures are reporting correctly. Any ideas?

Also, any suggestions on this above topic, a good HSF for Socket 939 recommendation (non-stock), would be greatly appreciated.

I also have the ASUS A8V K8T800 Pro (Socket 939) motherboard. I swapped to the MSI board because everyone stated the nForce 3 Ultra Chipset would be better for gaming. I also have slow boot times with WinXP Pro with the Asus Board (it flew once inside the operating system). The MSI Board boots quick and runs great. Just concerned about the temps. Anyone recommend using the ASUS board over the MSI board? Any advantages to either? Please help. I have done research and both seem to have PROS and CONS.

Thanks

Actually, the CPU heatsink should feel warm if it is contacting the CPU properly. If it doesn't feel warm, then perhaps it is not making good contact with the CPU and needs to be re-mounted.

You may want to try that out and see if it makes a difference.

For reference, my AXP 1800+ is running @ 36C (but who knows how accurate that is), and I can definitely feel warmth if I touch my Zalman 7000A-AlCu heatsink.

I guess I should have said that it felt warm but not hot. There is definitly contact between the HSF and Proc and I definitely do think its a bios misread problem.

Currently the processor is showing 125°F which isn't bad. But, the next time I reboot it will be at 141°F or so. It appears that I get a good read every so often. Then reboot and its bad.

I also have a K8N Neo 2 with an 3500+. I have a SLK 948U mounted with a 120mm Pabst Fan. Under stress i get up to 69 Celsius with MSI Core Centre, 3 degreed less with the NVIDIA tools.
I wonder as well if the BIOS gives wrong readings or if I did not mount the CPU propoerly (although I have done this like 10 times)

I am having the same problem. Idle I get 58-60 and under load I get 68. I touch the heatsink and it is not that hot. Unsaid, what do you get for temps when you run your A8V?

The bios is wrong on the Neo2 939 board. I get 52 idle upto 70c on prime testing from corecentre, but i now have a temp probe attached to my matrix orbital and i get 39c idle 49 load with the probe right at the base of the CPU/socket. Those temps are with my OC of 2.55Ghz.

I just updated my BIOS to ver 1.3. Prior to this, the CoreCentre would report a steady temp in the fifties (celcius) under no load while the Nvidia SystemUtility would report a temp in the lower forties (celcius). Since my heatsink didn't feel hot, I'm guessing CoreCentre has the temp wrong. After the BIOS update, my temp in CoreCentre fluctuates tremendously going upto 110C and as low as 1-5C. My fan speeds are also either always low of off. The SyatemUtility still behaves normally. I'm a bit disturbed by the reported fan speeds in CoreCentre. Does anyone know anything about all this?
