MSI 9550SE or Gigabyte FX5200?

lol... well, this is what it comes down to. I'm putting together a computer for my cousin, budget to the max, under $350 here. The two listed cards are what I have access too locally so I can get this biotch done and in the mail for him ASAP.

He's going to be playing games on it... I don't think anything like HL2 or Doom 3.. but still, newer games. I realize these aren't the best of the best, but we take what we can, right?

http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=14-125-131&depa=0 Gigabyte card.

Unless by some miracle, some stuff gets put on mega sale at the local stores tomorrow (BB,CC, etc.) then one of these will be going in his machine.

Thanks guys!

I don't have that luxury.. 🙁 this needs to be done tomorrow, or monday at the latest. That's why I need to go with local deals. 🙁

LOL - so is the 9550 SE.

They will both suck pretty hardcore.

A better buy would be a GeForce FX 5500. At least that card will probably be 128-bit, and Best Buy definitely has those.

Ok, so if I can get something thats at least a 128-bit card.. it wont be completely terrible, right?

Time to rummage the ads and see what I can find... wish me luck fellas! 🙂

Thanks!

errr.. let me ammend that, 128-bit.. but NOT a GeForce 4 MX anything, correct?

geforce 4 mx = rebadged geforce 2

I believe CompUSA or Best Buy (one of those) has a Geforce FX 5500 for $50. That will blow both of your cards out of the water... but still it's very yucky.

lol, alright.. well if thats what we gotta do.. then that might be the ticket...

The other option.. I have a ti4200 in my rig.. I could sell that to myself for $50, and then apply that + perhaps another 50 for a new card for me... but I don't know if 100 bucks is going to get me a solid replacement for my ti4200.

It might buy you a Ti4600 on eBay? That's a pretty solid Ti4200 replacement.

If you luck out, you can get a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra for around $100 on eBay, too - I just got a BFG one for around that. That'd also be faster - about Ti4600 level in DX7/8 games with no FSAA/Aniso. WITH FSAA/Aniso, it kills the Ti4600 even in DX7/8 games.

And, needless to say, in DX9 games it slaughters the Ti4600 in image quality and speed (the Ti4600 has to run the DX8 path, presuming the game has one).

sounds the better idea

"Friends don't let friends buy 64-bit graphics cards. "

thats the funniest thing I have read all day.. im rolling here!

/me remembers when a 64-bit 4MB Mach64 card was "high-end", and cost $600 MSRP. (I got mine for $230 in VLB, and I was as happy as... well, probably as some of you that just got a 6800.)
