Kicking myself as well because I just received a used GTX 650 for a neighbor's computer for the same $65. Oh and it's actually $65 AMIR; $95 OTD.

It is the newer version of the GTX 650 which I have in my HTPC and runs like a fickin champion for what it is. The 1GB of RAM limits the ability to place textures in video RAM but all you need to do in newer titles is drop the texture detail down a notch. It only really runs newer titles at medium details anyway and sometimes have to drop the resolution to 720p but still looks better than "next gen" consoles at their upsampled 720p. That said, it probably has less overall horsepower than the 6990 but I have had zero problems with NVIDIA's recent cards.

I don't think that the 6990 is a fast enough card to make use of 4GB of GDDR5. You would be better off with a faster 2GB card - especially at resolutions of 1920 x 1200 (~1080p) or below. I have a R9 270X 2GB, that can play everything I've tried at 1080p resolution, and these often hit the $129 price point. I bough tmine used for $90.

If you really want 4GB, you can get it as well:

The 6990 is a dual-GPU card. The 4GB of video RAM is split across the two GPU's, so you effectively only have 2GB of RAM to really work with.

That said, the 6990 is a faster card than a GTX 750. If your son's 6990 is dying he should look at an R9 290/390, GTX 970, etc.

Sorry, but you can't really expect to replace a $300+ card with a sub-$100 card and have it be comparable. However, perhaps this would make a decent holdover card while you send that in for warranty? From what I can see that card had a limited lifetime warranty (XFX support Phone: 800-880-3225).

Anyone else notice if you tab over the 2GB version of the card, there is another $15 rebate form listed there that also includes the model number for the 1GB card. Any chance you could submit both for $45 back? Only problem I see is that want original UPC with both.
