Ok, a friend of mine with historically low cholesterol and blood pressure has recently been advised that he's in the unhealthy zone in both. His doctor claimed a primary cause was probably his habit of going to Dim Sum on a bi-weekly basis. I usually go once a week, but I'm a little concerned. Anyone know any general guidlines for this kind of thing?

his cholesterol and blood pressure probably stem from the consumption of too much meat and salt. It doesn't take a scientist to know that in dim sum places it's pretty much all meat and salt that are served. Your friend should really cut back to once a month or something. Twice a week is just too many times to be eating dim sum no matter how good it is.

MSG gives me bad migraines. I keep dim sum to once every 2 weeks at most myself... but I'm supposedly "young and healthy".

BTW where do you go for dim sum ? This one place in Plainview called the Hong Kong Seafood House on Old Country Road has some of the best on the island. The owners are very personable too... great place.

I think I've been there. After going to 15 different places in LI, my favorite is "Fortune Wheel" (off of 135 in, I believe, levittown). If you haven't been, you should definitely give it a try. Their springrolls and shumai best even some of the well known places in NYC.

ack. well I hope I don't have to cut back much. Of course my friend is known in the restaurant as "Mr.Shumai" because of the insane quantities of shumai he eats and takes home. Incidentally, the guy is as skinny as a rail.

I had dim sum once, and still have no idea what it is. I was assured, however, that what I ate was devoid of chicken feet or other weirdness (I can only hope she was right about that!)

Fortune Wheel in the Best Buy mall.. I live 5-10 minutes from there. I don't care for their food though - always cold (even when taken out of that heater bin in the middle of the place) and not up to par with Hong Kong Seafood House (they're newer and just as close)... you should definitely frequent the latter more ! At one point, this new buffet-style place on Old Country Road/Newbridge Rd. intersection in Hicksville opened up and offered Dim Sum... for a couple weeks, HKSH had no business... and guess what... everyone came flocking back...

Dim Sum is a generic term for these a-la-carte dishes... I'm an ABC myself so that's what I've come to understand. The chicken feet is very recognizable... they have 3 claws and is bright orange. ;) I like the sauce, but hate the feet... I eat the narrow leg portion (just like one side of your everyday chicken wings), though most of the time they give just the feet.

Dim Sum is great for a weekend breakfast.

ehh, you don't have an inside man :p. I have an in with one of the indonesian waiters (wendy), that only hooks us up with fresh fresh food. They did lose their main chef about 6 months ago, and for a couple months I stopped going because the majority of the food was excessively salty. Now their stuff is mostly quite good.

Is Hong Kong Seafood house the place that just opened recently?

It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't my thing for breakfast. I usually prefer french toast and bacon, or a bowl of Cocoa Pebbles.. :)

I edited above with:

HKSH has been open for a few years now... Fortune Wheel has been there since I can remember... so relatively speaking, it's new... but a handful of years new.

ahh, the new one was the one I was thinking of. I didn't like their dim sum very much at all. I will give HKSH a try next sunday :).

from what i've read, msg is one of the most thoroughly studied additive. it won't do you any harm. just headaches or tingling of the jaw if you're sensitive to it. some culture even use it like table salt & pepper :)

It's in the same mall as Fireside near the intersection of Old Country Road and South Oyster Bay Rd. (Hicksville/Plainview border).

They should have a weekend special where you can get the large size dim sum at medium size prices... been this way for many months now... look for a pink flyer inside the restaurant that states this...

dim sum is an imperial chinese breakfast. much of it is some meat wrapped in a pastry. i'm sure there is a lot of salt involved. usually served by people pushing carts, they show you what is in the cart and you pick an item or 3, then the next cart comes and you pick from that.
