I don't think it installs automatically right now but it is on Windows Update.

Don't know what has changed in this version either, but maybe a change log will turn up.

It failed for me. Last night I was notified of 18 critical updates were available, but when I selected all of them to install only 17 were setup to install. I went back and the MSE application update wasn't installed. I selected it again through Windows Update (W7Pro), but clicking past the Ready to Install screen led me to a screen reporting the installation failed. Error 0x800B0003. I am not running any other anti virus/malware on this desktop.

I tried going through the Mr. FixIt route, which claimed to have fixed something, but repeated updates for MSE continued to fail, even after several reboots. Windows Defender was turned off (its integrated and cannot be uninstalled). I had to roll back using a previous Restore Point to get the pre-existing version of MSE back.

I found it odd the MSE app update uninstalled MSE, but couldn't install the new version. I also tried this through the MSE website and got the same results. Thanks M$ for f-ing it up!

Bizarre. I've never seen that happen.

So did you already try this:
download newest MSE, then uninstall and reboot.
Then install MSE?

Worked perfectly on three systems. Three to go. :) The MSE upgrade requires user interaction to complete the installation.

Uninstall the current MSE?

Sorry, spent the morning chasing issues on the PC. I logged onto it this morning, shut the monitor off and when I came back an hour later it had rebooted. I then got the 'Searching for Solutions' as it crashed. I canceled the search, went to open the Event Viewer and the MMC reported it was unable to create the snapin for the event viewer.

I ran through that f-ing monkey (using sfc) and discovered all of the updates from yesterday were now missing. I verified this when I opened Windows Update. I went through and did all the critical updates except for MSE and Office and it seems I am still being persisted with Kernal Power issues. Ugh

I have a working MSE, but just not the latest app version. I guess I could create a Restore Point, uninstall, and then try to install the new version. I fear I am on the edge of the Reinstall Everything cliff. If that happens I may just Hackintosh.

BTW, anybody know if M$, Adobe, etc. require phone re-activations of licensed (paid for) software? This would be W7Pro, Office, CS5, etc.

That doesn't sound like the updates fault, that sounds like the update failed because you already had existing issues with the system :/

Windows 7 and Office do not require phone reactivation unless it feels like something is wonky or illegitimate. Nuking a drive and reinstalling on the exact same system does not typically trigger that, and it just works, but itll let you know if something is up. Adobe tends to be a lot more strict with their keys, and you may need to call them to get the key to activate. Phone reactivations tend to be pretty painless either way.

I used MSE's own check for updates (under help) and it updated me to the newest MSE.

I did see a new option in the setup: Turn On Automatic Sample Submission.

I did find this while searching:

Added monitoring network activity in real time.
Added support management capabilities, namely configuration settings to disable user interfaces in inactive user sessions.
Improved self-protection

that's all I have found so far.

Correction, not a Kernal Power BSOD this time, but one against the NT File System. I built this PC 2.5 years ago and have since replaced all RAM, hard drives, power supply, and I stopped using the internal graphics of the Core i processor in favor of a standalone video card. Still, I get strange stability issues.

And while these issues have kept me busy of late this is the first time I've run into a Microsoft software not able to install on a Microsoft operating system. I've uninstalled MSE, deactivated Defender, and then tried installing MSE but it fails for the same no-clue error (0x800B0003).

At this point I am guessing either the motherboard or processor for stability issues, but cannot say this would affect only one piece of software out there. Personally, I'm about to take a hammer to the whole thing. What a waste of time and money.

And my 7-8 year old XPpro still works trouble free (its just slow). Jeez.

did you update the BIOS?

did you check the caps for leakage?

Is the system overheating?

is the PSU providing stable power?

I have noticed some issues with the newest MSE.

Unlike the previous version, it started to slow down my system noticeably. Browsing the internet became slower and slower. Searching networked drives was slowed down considerably. Very annoying.

I disabled real time protection and my system performed normally again. So I will be looking for a better alternative.
