MSConfig wont run

I have just built my new system with Asus P4P800 and having installed the MS XP op system I cannot run msconfig or asus probe. It displays and then closes itself. I am logged on as administrator so dont see it as a permissions problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I have not seen this problem before.
 
Do you have the same problem when attempting to run regedit, etc?

Could be a virus/worm/trojan.
