MS WORD

Try deleting it and see if Word creates a new one, Failing that, repair it from add/remove programs.
 
Open a blank document, or open normal.doc, and remove all formatting and text ,the nsave the file as normal.doc with no text or formatting.

That is my point - I can't.
New documents open WITH text and formating.

This should work. Do a search for normal.dot and delete it. Word should create a new one for you.
