when you open a document... it's considered modified by word.
and as for your question... i can't help you... since i haven't used word 97 for many years.
i know in word xp... there's an option to not auto update when you insert a date.

Is what you inserted a date or a field? If it's a field, you can probably use a different field name and it will display the created date.
