MS Word Question

In Word 97, how do I turn off the function that automatically updates the date of a document everytime you open it? I want it to keep the original date. I am sure it's right in front of me.

Are you sure you're looking at the correct date? The Created Date shouldn't change, while the Modified, Accessed, and Printed dates will.

Are you using this as a field? (similar to page #)

Yep. It's changing the revision date to todays date. But I didn't revise it, just opened it.
The date is in the footer.

right?

when you open a document... it's considered modified by word.

and as for your question... i can't help you... since i haven't used word 97 for many years.

i know in word xp... there's an option to not auto update when you insert a date.

I'm working off of memory too, so if I'm refering to something irrelevant I'm sorry.

Is what you inserted a date or a field? If it's a field, you can probably use a different field name and it will display the created date.

It is a revision date in the footer. I didn't create the document but I have to use it in my training. I don't want it to look like I changed or revised it when I print out the handouts and it's changing the revision date when I open it.

In the footer, just type out the original date instead of using the AutoText. You can tell it's AutoText because it's highlighted grey. If it's manually typed out, it shouldn't update.

It is highlighted gray. Can I turn that feature (auto text) off?

Just delete it and retype it.

When you right click on it... does the menu say "Toggle Field Codes".

If so, it should say "{ CREATEDATE }". Update the field and it'll display the created date.

When I right click on it I just get the standard menu. I am going to contact the author. I can't edit it either and it's not a "Read Only" document.
