Have you ever thought that people use Windows because of the user friendliness? I can understand where you're coming from. Just because they're a monopoly doesn't mean they can make a crappy product or produce one that has a lot of security flaws.

I totally agree with this. I'm a Windows user, and use plenty of other MS products here at work, and actually like them, but I totally agree with your statement.

That's exactly why they can, and do it. Given, it's impossible to find any software that's put out without a single flaw, but the amount of patching that is required for Windows is becoming excessive. MS is allowed to be the monopoly it is and this contributes to the fact that it is the most user friendly OS, give the smaller OSes, Linux for example, more time and see what happens.

windowsupdate.com works thru support.microsoft.com, but it can't come up with any updates tho...must be from a different server...everything says "0".

Windows does have its flaws. The fact that every year MS has to release an increasing number of patches shows that they don't spend enough effort on weeding out bugs despite Bill's recent memo to the company stressing quality. However, Linux has it's share of flaws which I am sure would be apparent if it were the #1 desktop software. Viruses aren't any fun when they don't make headlines because the OS they are targetting only constitutes a few percentage points of market share.

great... I stay late to make sure all the servers are patched and I can't even get to the freaking MS site.

Most are fine and the firewall has been stopping the worm, but there are a few older servers we still need to patch. Oh well, I'm going to the ballgame tomorrow night, so it will just have to wait! :p

windowsupdate works for me, tho I'm in Linux so it just takes me to that site that says I need to be running a valid MS OS, and then gives me further info. This page is probably hosted on the actual www.windowsupdate.com server which isn't getting attacked (if it is) like the microsoft.com one is ?

On windowsupdate.com, I can go all the way through the updating process to where it downloads, where it chokes halfway and tells me to try again later. Been like that all day. However I can browse all around www.microsoft.com without any problems.

Ok, ok, hang on guys. I'll host em, but I'm on dialup, and I gotta go find the cd real quick. I'll post the links as soon as they are up. 40GB of bandwidth for this month, looks like it'll come in handy :)

Dialup? Ick. Better make sure to get 'em to some broadband users so we can mirror. :)
