this might be worth a separate thread its just another irritation

I saved a txt file using win 7 to a USB stick
when I tried to open this txt file on the win10 comp it was corrupted

first time a text file has corrupted over 2 computers for me. win10 isnt good so far

Notepad is hilariously buggy. I've had it do weird stuff when trying to select text as well. Like it won't select the right part or just act weirdly in general. If you create a new file and type "this app can break" and save and close then open it, it will also be corrupt. (at least in XP, not sure about newer versions) Fun stuff.

Is that USB formatted as NTFS? If not, you can't trust it to keep data intact. Even with NTFS, it's a good idea to Safely Remove it from the system tray, or eject the USB drive from My Computer/This PC.

Still get errors? The USB port or the USB flash drive itself might be bad.

I use Notepad all the time. Have since Windows 3.1

No weird issues to report in over 30 years of Notepadding.

Did you do a safe USB disconnect after saving the file? My rule of thumb is to do a safe disconnect if I've written any data to a USB storage device.

NTFS doesn't help keep data intact AFAIK. As it maintains a backup MFT it's less likely to end up with a trashed filesystem than say FAT16/32.

It's a much more robust filesystem than FAT32. First thing I do with external drives is convert them to NTFS. It may have more wear and tear on flash drives than FAT32 but I prefer the peace of mind.

I have heard exFAT is good for USB thumb drives. Pros/cons of this?

I think exFAT is not as write intensive as NTFS. It might be better than FAT32. With FAT32, I run into the Windows prompt "your disk may need to be checked" far too often. You want exFAT too, if you are gonna be using the UFD on a Macbook. Macs don't accept NTFS.

I typically use exFAT because it doesn't have the FAT32 >4GB file limit. Before I tried exFAT I switched from FAT32 to NTFS but I encountered what I'm now sure is a flash drive issue rather than a file system issue - massive write performance slowdown on a drive that hasn't been wiped in some time. Therefore when I'm setting up cheap backup systems for customers with minimal data I tend to wipe the drive every few years to recover the performance (I've seen write performance go down to KB/sec rather than MB/sec for large files, one quick format later and it's back to normal).

I thought the issue was down to NTFS being unsuitable for flash drives but having seen it on exFAT as well I think I can safely rule that out. I wonder if the issue hasn't happened at all with FAT32.

Which flash drive?

I've used Verbatim, Sandisk and Kingston typically, I've seen it happen on all of them. Having said that, knowing my customers and these drives' roles as backup drives, they probably don't get connected for a year maybe more, then rinse and repeat for say 4-5 years. It's known that flash storage doesn't like being left idle.

Verbatim is slow, at least the tiny colorful ones I have, 4 and 8 GB.

Kingston UFDs are bad. Period. Gave up on them long time back.

Lexar can work well for a long time but constant use will put it in read only mode.

Sandisk metallic USB 3.0 FDs are bit better. At least, no serious data loss so far. But they run very hot.

I use 11 on a surface pro but not on my gaming PC yet. Most of the annoyances like the taskbar and telemetry can be reverted with third party tools, and you can still use an offline user account, but I have not found a good custom dark theme yet, which is essential for me. I like one called "Windows 10 Black Edition" but it doesn't fully work in 11.

11 doesn't really offer anything over 10, but at some point new hardware like the Intel E cores will force people to use it. I was not sure Logitech LGS and the Daniel_K X-Fi drivers would work with 11, but it seems the current versions are in fact compatible.

One other irritating thing related to your problem that's happened with Win10/11 in recent years is that Windows themes used to be completely free to download (ie. no MS account required) from the Microsoft Store. All the ones I've tried lately require an MS account. It's a shame because it used to be a good way to get quality wallpapers, but also on Win11 to get more colour scheme choices (well, someone else's choice).

I think custom themes have never been officially supported and need a theme patcher (UltraUXThemePatcher) to work, but they work nicely otherwise. virtualcustoms is a good source for them.

I just realised I missed an essential bit of info (themes from the ms store).

I finally found good dark themes called One Dark Pro and BIB. It turns out you need a theme for 22H2 specifically, and many themes made for older versions of 11 have glitches, especially in classic MFC-type apps. I especially like BIB and it works without any issues, and is also free unlike some others I found. I also use the Open Shell start menu and ExplorerPatcher to remove all the rounded corners and change a few things with the taskbar.

Popped up a full-screen whatsit, gave me two options, "Got it", and "Schedule". Clicking the second option gets you to another screen, where you can decline, which brings you to another screen to confirm your declination ("Go to Win10").

I started getting this a couple of weeks ago after I finished the new build. Annoying as hell...but I'll live with it for now. Still MIGHT upgrade to Win11.

That ASROCK Killer mobo has killed your desire to upgrade :D

Damn, why do they make such reliable mobos??? Microsoft gotta eat!
I actually don't mind win11, I use it at work. But I do use a taskbar/start fix program to get a vertical Taskbar.

I set up 11 on the gaming PC. All the drivers and app files transferred automatically (including obscure things like X-fi drivers) and the setup was surprisingly smooth. The BIB theme, Open Shell and Explorer Patcher make it look just like 10. There was one strange problem, 11 could not read two data SSDs at all that worked fine on 10, and behaved as if they were unformatted. Macrium could still read them so I just re-imaged them.
