MS Outlook 2000 deletes email on closing

When I close an email it disappears. Doesn't even go into the deleted folder. I looked through all the settings I could find and didn't see anything related to that problem.
 
open outlook > click on view > current view > click on messages.

sounds like it is only showing unread mail which is one of the options under the current view menu.

Bingo.

I've had people use that setting before, it scares the crap out of them.
Messages dissapear after reading.
