I am not sure if anyone has been using the MS Office 2003 Small Business edition? I currently have Office 200 SB. I was wondering if anyone thought an upgrade in the near future would be worth it?

Also... what's up with the student / teacher editions of office? Are they full fledged versions and worth the price?

Thank you,

The student / teacher editions of office are full fledged versions and, therefore, are a real bargain. Of course, those are only for qualified buyers, which would be students and/or teachers.

Whether an upgrade to Office 2003 SB would be worth it, I have some doubt. I'm still using Office 97 Pro. When I look at Word XP and Excel XP on my son's PC, I do not see much to compel me to upgrade, although, admittedly, I don't want to spend the money.

It's too expensive for any single person to buy it just for their own use. Just steal it.

Ok...I'm just kidding I guess, but really, the cost of the software is just ridiculous for someone who isn't going to use it for business purposes.

I just made an edit to my previous post. I left out the words "do not" in the last sentence, so the meaning, as originally written, was the opposite of what I intended. When I first looked at Word XP, I was surprised how similar it looked to my Word 97. But, I believe some of the differences are not visible at first glance. Somewhere, on Microsoft's site, they have a table showing the differences between several versions of Office. Sorry, I can't recall the URL for that page.

"The student / teacher editions of office are full fledged versions"

Except they are missing some applications. I do not think Access is included with the student/teacher edition of Office.

No. 99.9999999999% of all the stuff in it is not need by anyone at anytime. Of course, that is a hyperbole. Get StarOffice instead or an old copy of Office. Unless you own your own small business and need a big tax write-off, don't shell out any cash for Office.

The major difference between Discounted versions and the full business versions of MS Office is the Access database app, most versions don't include it, I beleive.

But if you want to know my HONEST opinion about newer-vs-older versions of Office:
1. It's pointless to upgrade versions, unless you deal with people that insist on only using the newer file formats.

2. If you have to buy MS Office, always get the latest versions.

3. Unless you realy realy need it for whatever reason (Like you boss says you have to use it, or you have a bunch of legacy MS stuff that depends on Office for integration), get Oo_Org instead.

After all, is writing a report in MS word going to make you seem smarter then if your wrote it in OpenOffice? Is Spreadsheets created in Oo_Org going to add up differently then if you created them in Excell?

Not likely.

Well, I suppose Drag is right. I wouldn't upgrade from Office 2000 to Office 2003.

I did just upgrade from Office 97 to Office 2003, mainly because Office 2003 works much better with the different accounts supported by W2K and XP. I bought the student version for about $120, which isn't bad because it allows you to install it on up to three home machines. The student version does not include Access, but I've never used it much anyway

My mom uses Office 97 still, and I think that was a copy I had for college but stopped using.

Open Office is great. If you haven't used it, try it out.

Student/Teacher version is fairly well-priced... not that everyone here is a student or a teacher... *cough*

Open Office is great, but some stuff needs to be worked out, of course. I wouldn't recommend buying Office 2003 unless you need it for advanced business collaboration and such. Has anyone tried Corel's newest office bundle?

Another vote for OpenOffice. It even works well with all the MS Office files I drag home from work on occasion.
