MS Intellimouse Exp USB unrecognized by WinXP SP2 lapp

I have an Acer TravelMate 4000. When I plug my USB MS Intellimouse Explorer I get info in the system tray saying new USB device or something and it says its installing. But the end result is that it says USB device not recognized and that the device has malfunctioned.

Sometimes when I pull it out and plug it back in it works for about one second. I can move the cusor for one or two seconds then the light on the mouse goes out and just the trackpad works.

Its weird cause I could have sworn I used it OK last week. I even just did a test clean install of XP on another partition but same problem.

Any idea what I can do? Thanks for any help.

It's either the mouse or the interface. The easiest way to check it is to test the system with another mouse.

Maybe it's not getting enough power from the USB port. Have you tried the laptop with the power cord vs battery or different power saving modes?
