MS HD-DVD drive 72 bucks at Sam's

Im going to post what I posted in the other Sams Club thread, which I hoped would be updated.

According to a poster at FW, in order to get this price, the Sams Club must have only 1-2 left in stock.

Good hunting!

the fact that it's so cheap tells me, BLU RAY HAS WON!

I'm neutral, IDK which format wins as long as one of them wins, and wins soon!

When these sell out they are gonna put out the ISHTAR box set special edition with updated graphics by George Lucas and a new ending.

Ishtar is a great movie. Have you actually seen it?

I too thought that this was particularly lackluster.
Right up there with "Reds" as the worst of the worst.
When Hoffman flops, he really flops, like he did in Messenger: Joan of Arc.

However, I thought that Milla Jovovich's performance was truly one of the finest I'd ever seen. She was nothing less than incredible. The most powerful (woman's) roll in my memory.
PS Manimal, I like your wry sense of humor.

Edited: Sorry if I got a little off-post.

Not really. It's just how Sam's Club works. As their stock gets low, they mark down the price until things sell. If they don't, they keep getting marked down.

FWIW, most, if not all, Sam's Clubs have a "discount" area in the back where they haul all of the low stock/damaged items. There are usually some pretty good deals.

Get ready to get your cheap HD on kids. Wal-Mart just threw down some serious green for a batch of Chinese-made HD DVD players. Just as they brought DVD players down to near-disposable status, their deal for 2 million HD DVD players produced by China's Great Wall corporation will ultimately do the same for hi-def optical. The guts are developed by Taiwan's Fuh Yuan with a touch of help from Japan's TDK. How much? A magical $299.

Update: Pull back the reigns HD DVD fanboys, Akihabara now says that they've made a "huge mistake" with their translation: the original source called it "?? HD DVD and ?? means Blu-RAY." In other words, Blu-ray HD DVD. Huh?

Both? One of the other? A combo plpayer for $299!? ...

Or maybe they didn't actually order anything at all.

anyone know anything about walmart discounting the prices of these as well? i heard they were and went a few weeks back but they were still $200.

I've been calling Sam's about twice a week checking stock. They have four left at my store, hopefully they'll drop the price at 3 or 2. 😀

Its too soon at call a winner or loser in the HD-DVD / Blueray war.
Actually really speaking I think this war itself will be redundant soon.

The times are not the same as the VHS/Betamax days. At that time the stakes were really high as there was no other medium to distribute Movies.
The Technological advacement was not that fast either. Remember VHS ruled almost 20 years after that until the Video Cassette itself was phased out and rendered Obsolete

Today there are so many ways people can buy/watch movies at home. The Current Regular DVD itself is not bad either. A Majority of people wont be able to get too much value out of HD content over the current regular DVD format.

I have personally rented movies in the following format regularly.

1. Internet Download (MovieLink)
2. Moviebeam
3. DVD
4. On Demand.

There are others too.

Also everyone knows how fast the technology becomes obsolete these days.
So by the time any of the two formats are ready to declare victory, the format itself will be Obsolete.
So in my view these two formats will co-exist for a few years. One will surely out-sell the other, but only by fraction more, and will togather disappear in 3-4 years.

I have this drive. It works well for me. I don't currently have a blu-ray payer or a PS3, although I may buy one someday. Both technologies have their advantages, personally I prefer the HD-DVD for one reason. I like the fact that they offer HD-DVD / DVD combos on most new releases. I see several advantages to this. First, it will play on any DVD player I currently. I take my HD-DVD copy of "Happy Feet" and play it on my XBox HD-DVD drive at home, play it on my car dvd player on trips, and if we have a rainy day on vacation my daughter can watch it at the vacation house. Second, I can loan it to friends/family so they can watch it. OK, I am not sure this an advantage for me, but it is for them. Third, If HD-DVD does fail, I can watch the movies at Standard Def on a Blu-Ray player. Blu-Ray discs have none of these "advantages".

The only problem I have with HD-DVD now is it's library. It seems most of the titles I want to buy are Sony owned and only released on Blu-Ray.
