MS dropping win2k already?

<< What... no support for 2k? Hmm... well, call 800-936-5700, pay $35, and you can get full support for anything Microsoft.

What is that number you posted?

<< who actually uses MS support? especially around here...with all the warez'ers and whatnot.. >>

ALOT of people that dont know anything about computers do, expecially if they have ME.

Ive never called MS support, anything ive ever had a question with ive been able to fix on my own or at least found hints on the Knowledge Base or MS Forums.

If you all remember correctly Windows 2000 was introduced in October 1999, so 3 years l8r M$ drops the support as has done in the past with Windows 3.1,95,98,98SE & NT 3.51, 4.0

As for the Technical Support, I've used all my credits last week with 5 phone calls in one day to get the Portuguese translation of a few FP2002 commands, and the ladies that answered the phone we're very nice indeed...

😀

I am confused. Does this mean that they'll yank the "knowledge base" app off their website too? I've never actually CALLED MS on the phone, but I sure do check that website a lot.

MS offers Technical Support? Wow, I never knew that. I'll be sure to call them all the time now.

No. Knowledge Base stays for sure.

<< anyone have a link for them dropping win2k support? >>

This page has some info on their product lifecycles. Here is another page with a table at the bottom with some info.

They shouldn't be able to discontinue these older OS's unless they license someone else to support them into the future. I don't know anyone that liked WinME over Win98SE. Same with WinXP over Win2k, its not as well liked by many people.

The OS is almost three years old, there's no reason they should continue to support it.

Continuing to support legacy products requires extensive training that will rarely be used, & is not a cost effective way to run a call center.

Support the products that generate the most calls, & drop the older ones.

Fact of life, get over it.

This means nothing to us. It means that businesses that actually use Microsoft's support will be SOL. It's not like Win2000 will stop working. Those of us that support our own things will be unnaffected by this.

They shouldn't destroy the KB, they have to maintain it for their other OSes and products, and it's not likely to be that significant a cost to keep the Wink2 part around.

However, running a 24/7 Win2000 support help center is. We're not talking burger flippers, these are highly trained professionals being paid for 24/7 work time. I've seen the help center for a 3000 person company and it was expensive enough, and we had no outside clients. Microsoft's must be mammoth.

That's why they shut down support for previous OSes...when the cost of maintaining them exceeds the revenue from that OS and it's support contracts, they start looking at ending support. After some time they do so.

I don't like it any better than anyone else...but I understand the reasoning.

However the win2k portion of the knowledge base should remain in tact, it shouldn't cost as much as the support center.
