Those of you who have 1800FPs and other LCDs which it looksbad w/, did you use the correct setting on ClearType? They updated it, with 2 settings, RGB and BGR(?). It SHOULDN'T look bad.

I have 3 LCDs and it looks like crap on all of them...I wish Windows would standard AA all fonts like OS X and Linux

Make sure you turn on the right type of cleartype. They have RGB and something else like GRB LCDs and I think the Dells use the nonstandard GRB.

People would complain about MS having a monopoly in the font market.

I've tried Cleartype on every monitor I own, including my current Dell 1901FP LCD. In every case, it was turned off again since the blurred text is annoying and harder to focus on for extended periods of time. And I did use Microsoft's page to adjust the Cleartype settings -- but was still dissatisfied with the results.

i cant stand the little green and red pixles on the edges of the fonts...ewwww

It's better than blurry fonts.

Yep. and there are still red edges. The 1800FP has issues with cleartype, IIRC it's the #1 complaint about the monitor to Dell (at least, according to their own messageboards).

I have tried both and it still looks horrible. I dunno what's wrong with Standard font smoothing. It's crystal clear on my 1800FP, unlike cleartype........

They look like Win98 font with out AA. On my LCD, it looks sooo much better with it on. But I don't think this should be a default feature... obviously some people don't like it.

I have the same monitor and I played around with all the ClearType settings... they all look like crap. I turn off ClearType, it's like day and night difference. I think I will stick with the ClearType off, thank you.
