MS CES Keynote

Queasy

Moderator<br>Console Gaming
Microsoft is holding their CES keynote tonight at 6:30 PM PST/9:30 EST. Steve Balmer is the speaker. I'm hoping to hear more about Natal and possibly news on Live for Windows Mobile phones as well.

You can watch it here.

Of course the usual suspects will also be doing live blogs:
Kotaku
Ars
Engadget

Already two leaks so far:
1. Natal out this year (meh)
2. Some sort of Avatar Game Room thingie (possibly intriguing)

I don't think that is a surprise.

Yeah, there was a survey mentioned about that before. Kind of like a mini-PSN Home but with classic arcade titles every where for you to play.

But each play will be a virtual quarter, 20 MS points?

That's a wild guess. MS doesn't usually give away things it can sell, so either that or the game won't be playable at all until you pay the XBLA price.

Heh...they must have tripped a breaker. There's a delay because they lost power. The stream just came up but all the lights aren't on yet.

"Ars Technica:
All the computers on the stage died and some are rebooting"

Hahaha..... so lame. Typical MS fail? 😉

A survey previously hinted at it, but tonight during Microsoft's keynote for CES confirmed that classic arcade games are coming not only to Xbox Live but to Games for Windows Live as well. Game Room will be accessible via a mini-hub that acts like a room for your Avatar that you can decorate and arrange to your desire. Obviously, some of the decoration for your Game Room will likely have a cost to them as well.

Game Room will be free to download but you'll purchase arcade games for 240 or 400 MS Points ($3 or $5) or play them once for 40 MS Points ($0.50) each time. If you want to just buy a game for either the Xbox 360 or PC, the cost is 240 MS Points. If you want to buy a game for both the Xbox 360 and PC, the cost is 400 MS Points.

You'll be able to invite friends over to your Game Room to show off and play in your custom arcade and vice versa. Friends will be able to play the games that you've purchased for free and you'll be able to do the same when visiting their game rooms. Game Room also supports Achievements, cross-platform Leaderboards and the ability to challenge friends to who can get the highest score. Game Room will support seamless transitioning between the Xbox 360 and the PC. You'll be able to play games on either the Xbox 360 or the PC and have all your scores and achievements follow you as you switch platforms to play the games on if you pay the 400 MS Point price.

Expect Game Room to be available on Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live sometime in the Spring with games being released every week over the next three years totaling more than 1,000 titles.

Judging from the video and some of the other media released, we should expect arcade classic from Konami, Intellivision, and Activision among many others. Games include:
* Finalizer - Super Transformation
* Super Cobra
* Centipede
* Lunar Lander
* Tempest
* Jungler
* Armor Battle
* Space Hawk
* Sub Hunt
* Gravitar
* Outlaw
* Red Baron
* Shao-Lin's Road
* Asteroids Deluxe
* Space Armada
* Millipede
* Scramble
* Combat
* Astrosmash
* Mountain Madness: Super Pro Skiing
* Crystal Castles
* RealSports Tennis
* Tutankham
* Adventure
* Star Raiders
* Football
* Road Fighter
* Battlantis
* Sea Battle
* Yars' Revenge

Natal was a big nothing burger as they just showed people talking about it over video of demos we've already seen.

Halo Reach had a video that was blocked from streaming that apparently showed some gameplay or it may have just been the same trailer released earlier at the VGAs. Either way, it got the best reaction from the audience out of the whole presentation though.

You'll be able to use your 360 with AT&T U-Verse ... this is crazy, I can't wait. I love my U-Verse service, the ability to only have one "box" in my game room would rock!

which is retarded because the microsoft site had it up even before the presentation.

Anyway, here's the link, I don't know if this was already out.

Most boring/pointless keynote ever!

Actually, I enjoyed the announcement that the Xbox 360 would finally get AT&T U-verse integration this year. They announced that a couple of years ago originally but it sounds like it may finally happen.

Now if only AT&T would upgrade the lines to my house so that I could U-verse...

And supposedly that same software that allows it to work on the 360 will let it work on PC too (Mediaroom). What to do what to do... I have my uverse dvr, media center pc running Windows 7, and my 360 all in the same room lol.

If you've got the media center PC with Windows 7, it sounds like you should be able to ditch the U-verse DVR. Or will they require you to have at least one U-Verse receiver in the house?

Two AT&T reps showed up on our doorstep Tuesday night trying to get us to swap to U-verse. I was tempted to do so, this makes it even more tempting.

Any details on what all you'll be able to do with the 360? Will it act as your cable box?

If I'm reading the press releases right, I believe it will act as U-verse set top box with all the same functionality and access to content.

So you'd not even need another cable box of any sort, the 360 would take the place of it (sorry, I know almost nothing about cable, I've never had a cable box before).

Cable box or satellite receiver...(again if I'm reading this right) the 360 will be able to act as the box/receiver for U-Verse. So will your Windows 7 PC with with Media Center.

I still want to see more details on how this works with the 360 and if there are any additional costs as they just kind of glossed over it in the presentation and the press releases. Presumably, that is information that would have to come from AT&T though.

I thought for sure this keynote would have included a presentation that featured a visibly sweating ballmar wearing a yellow pit stained polo shirt doing jumping jacks in front of a natal prototype. I am disappoint.
