hmm, I have an empty fish tank about that size... I dont really like fish, maybe I will get a turtle.

some questions for turtle owners

1) are turtles messy?
2) are turtles interactive?
3) waht do turtles eat?
4) how big do they get?

some questions for turtle owners

1) are turtles messy? it depends how hard you squish them. Generally, not really.
2) are turtles interactive? Yeah, but you can't use USB with them :(
3) waht do turtles eat? Bugs, worms, human souls. Normal fare.
4) how big do they get? Typical pet turtles only get about 6-7" in diameter, but of course, feeding it human souls make it grow much bigger.

:)

some questions for turtle owners

1) are turtles messy? i had 3 for a few years, they were messy without a filter. but if you clean the filters once a week(takes one minute) it will be fine.

2) are turtles interactive?yes, very i love watching them swim around a full tank of water

3) waht do turtles eat? turtle food, gold fish, alot of stuff actually

4) how big do they get? ive been told many times they grow no bigger than their tank/home. so if you have one for 4 years it wont out grow its tank. my gf had a red ear slider for 7 years and was as big as the one in the pics.

when i had the 3 red ear sliders, i had a log wedged inbetween the glass with a bright light right over it, so "sunbathed" 24/7 im gonna some how build a floor type deal above the water that he can get on but he stays burried under the rocks most of the time. turtlse love water, box turtles are your typical land turtles

cool I love turtles. I hate to see them in tanks, so hopefully you have the space to build a nice terrarium or something. turtles are very curious creatures and do particularly well when there is lots of stuff to do (dig, eat, swim, lounge, etc).

keep em clean (salmonella!)

how much space does a turtle need? I have tank ~35 gallon fish tank that I would consider converting into a turtle tank.

what a cutie.

i have 2 turtles Pooter (L) and Turtle (R)

i can try to answer your questions from the best of my experience

1) I would say they are not much dirtier than fishies. They take bigger craps thats for sure, but you can usually just scoop it right out. Just like fish, you need to change their water out fairly frequently to make sure it doesnt get unhealthy. I have a 40 gallon tank and I change the water about once a week. My tank also gets a LOT of sunlight which accelerates the algae growth. Im not really changing it so much bc it is dirty/poisonous, but bc it starts to get cloudy from the algae. its not a health hazard, just not attractive looking.

2) They are not really that interactive. They will recognize you as their food source and will pretty actively follow you when they are hungry (all the time). They are in general pretty dumb so they dont "play" with you.

3) Different species of turtles eat different diets. Some are more carnivorous that others. I feed mine Reptomin sticks which they LOVE. I give them lots of veggies too (carrots, anything green). Somethings they like, others not so much. but it is good to vary the diet. Pooter doesnt really like the green stuff, but Turtle loves it. They will also eat live fish and other meat...

4) I cant say for sure. Depends on the species and sex. I have heard different things about growing to the size of their environments. Turtle may grow to be 10-14" (females are larger, and thats a large species). Pooter will likely be a lot smaller (male, smaller species)

one thing to take into account is they need sunlight to keep their shells healthy. natural sunlight is the best, but there are bulbs you can buy that give out the right wavlengths. you can pm me if you want recommendations.

to the OP, be careful with the pebbles in there. if your turtle can fit them in his mouth he probably will. they can get lodged and cause serious problems. most people i have talked to dont have any substrate in their tanks (myself included). it gives them a little more room to swim and its also easier to scoop up the poops.

thx hardcore... nice sliders ya got there... brunswickite, that is the type i think you should get, their about 10 a pop and when babies, they can be as small as a half dollar and stay around that size for a few months but they dont grow fast like dogs so your tank will be plenty for 2 of em atleast for a year or more.

turtles LOVE those reptile sticks are whatever, my last 3 sliders didnt like veggies but loved the turtle food and gold fish/crickets/other small bugs they can chase. show me a pic of your tank hardcore. ya know ive never had a problem with rocks and turtles(knock on wood) and ive used that exact rock size for a few years but will but that into thought when I hit walmart next time, I was thinking of buying a floor filter or some kind, right now it doesn't have one but i will be stopping in walmart after work tonight.

another thing, the reason why this one is alone is because its quiet a carnivore. when my gf's sister bought it she put it in a tank with two small babies and the sliders that was 6-7 years old i posted above, well unforunately it ate both the babies and half of the turtle that was his size:(

sliders dont fight each other but for some reason this sideneck was very hungry

if you dont want to, then a couple of inches is fine just but a log/big rock they can sit on above water so they can sit under the light and lay out:) they can float and barely have their nose sticking out as long as they want but they come up for air every so often, mine LOVED the water, sliders are usually the turtles you see in the middle of ponds, lakes. as long as they have something to get on above the water, their fine. ive even used garden statues:)

more importantly than the volume, is the surface area of the base. I'd say anything like a 3' x 4' enclosure would be ideal. they can climb so just make sure the sides are longer than the length of the turtle.

Yeah, I wish my turtle could retract his limbs and shoot fire out while flying through the air :p
