MPAA finally sueing

This is good news for our economy since Hollywood/NewYork is the world leader in entertainment. Lock the ports if you got kids.🙂

The music industry -- meaning the four major labels, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, EMI Group PLC and the newly merged Sony Music Entertainment and BMG Entertainment -- has filed nearly 6,000 lawsuits against users, typically settling for less than $5,000 each.

Within two months of the first lawsuits, the number of unique users on Kazaa -- the Internet's largest P2P service and the prime spot for music-sharing -- dropped by half, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, from 7 million users per week to 3 million per week.

And now MPAA's Glickman is jumping on-board

The suits are the first major act of Glickman's new tenure and mark a fundamental split in philosophy from Valenti, who found filing suits against potential customers, as the Recording Industry Association of America has done, distasteful.

Newsgroups rule but I find them hard to search. And not everyone has access to a decent newsgroup service.

As for p2p, you can block ip addresses of "the man" with certain apps and plugins. If they can't download from you, they (probably) can't bust you.

I block all incomming TCP, all UDP but 53 for DNS , all outgoing TCP but 80, 25, 23, 110 ... I don't think I'll be getting a letter..or even unexpected charges on my CC from 443 stuff. 🙂

I wonder if my nForce3 chip on my socket939 motherboard blocks any ability to see me as well.

I have my nForce3 hardware firewall switched to max so all ports are blocked automatically unless a program I have is trying to send something or that same program is expencting a specific response.

Seems to work very well with games I'm happy to say.

Not sure if it would actually keep me safe from Big Brother tho.

Not that I download MP3s illegally.

I get them at aprox 2-5 cents a song from a legal Russian site. =D

The supreme court decided not to uphold the ruling that lets the RIAA simply ask for users identities from their ISP. Now they have to get a court order.

It adds more costs to the litigation.

This differently isn't a Bush thing. Democratic administrations are the ones who really tightened up the IPR laws. I worked for a Clinton appointed Ambassador that Bush kept in position that thought IPR was the only foreign policy! Ask yourselves why Hollywood and in particular the pop music industry was so STRONG for Kerry. Madonna needs a new pair of shoes! They knew that he would be putty in their hands when it came to strengthening legislation that protects IPR. Liberal administrations see IPR as a huge issue and conservative administrations just say, "What's that?"

I find that odd in that few conservatives even consider MP3 files and other new ways to manage music. They mostly just buy CD's. My liberal friends are the ones who got me interested in music as manageable files. A Canadian friend raved to me for more than a year before I even looked at the technology. I also find it interesting that this thread reflects that difference through the postings.

Many Russian sites are pirated. MP3 CD's are sold there routinely for $2.00 each and you get the entire work of an artist on one.

Big Brother does not allow chips that block Big Brother. If it is sold in the United States, it has a back door. Anyone here mature enough to remember the PGP history? It wasn't legal to use until the codde was weakened enough to allow the federal agencies to back door it.

It is a fact that if you are on the Internet or on a telephone, Big Brother is watching and listening. That crosses all administrations since 1985.
