MP3's sound worse than two goats bleating under water!!!!

Well OK, they?re not THAT bad, but they can't even begin to touch ATRAC 4.5 (Compression algorithm used in most MD players).

That said, I've been trying to find an ATRAC encoder (285.3 k/sec constant = 5:1 compression) and a codec to install so I can compress CD .wav files with ATRAC (vs. using MPEG layer 3) and store and listen to them basically the same way you can an MP3 file.

Am I only dreaming, or have I just been looking under the wrong stone?

Thanks,
JR..

At 256kbps it would take some kind of big eared mutant to be able to tell the difference between MP3s and CDs. That or you must have really high quality speakers. Or maybe I just have terrible hearing 😛

Actually I've been using creative digital audio center. I came bundled with my cound card. It just seem like coding to MP3 loses some of the ambiant sound that give the music depth. Not so when I record to a MD.

I'm going to give that encoder a shot though.
Thanks.

I've never really listened to a lot of 256 mp3's, but I can barely tell the difference between 192's and cd's. I use audiograbber with a Fraunhofler radium codec.
It's true that 128's and 160's sound bad (almost sounds like the music was channeled through a phaser or flanger guitar pedal).

JollyRoger ship me your speakers and I will ship you my $25 yamaha's. Problem solved, you will not be able to hear the difference between 128 rate mp3's and CD's.... 🙂 Yeah, that is me, always thinking of others over myself...... 😉

Why TH are you using that mp3 encoder? Go get AudioGrabber and the latest Lame MP3 or the hacked Radium Fraunhofer Codec. The latter will be harder to find because it's not really, umm...legal, but it's much better. 🙂

Definatley try the Fraunhofer encoder, ther are many out there that just plain suck hard *cough* audiocatlyst*cough*

How about AUG encoding?
Better quality then MP3.
Not as widly used though.
Up to 256K/sec bitrate.

Yeah, I got the LAME page bookmarked. I think I already have the Radium codec installed. (Came with DiVX 3.11a). I'll give it a shot. This VBR method sounds promising. I'll download it when I get home from work.
