MP3s - Backing up / Archieving?

How often do you all backup mp3s on your system?
What is the best way to do it? Load up NERO, and copy your full album directories to cdr, then delete them off the harddrive?

I have over 120 gig of albums right now, and would like to archieve them to cd.

how the hell did you manage to obtain that many mp3's? if you listened to each one only once it would take months to listen to them all! 🙂

I was wondering if anyone has toyed with writing a script that would copy the mp3's to a scratch space , run nero at the command line and then delete the mp3's from scratch space??? That way you could semi automate your backups.

How do I handle long file names that some mp3s have?
I know that nero will sometimes a) not burn or b) cut them off

i burn to dvd and house them on their own hard drive. imma have to upgrade the 120 gig hdd they are on to a bigger one soon. I rip my cds to ape and mpc so it gets big.

One time i accidently deleted all my albums, but i had every single song backed up. just took a few hours to pop in the cds and copy over the songs.

long filenames are a bummer. i use NTI CD / DVD Maker for data dvds. i feel it's a better burn. also, i keep my file names short

Artist (year) Album / (tracknumber) Song Title.
FOLDER / SONG

sid59 - are yo referring to nti backup???? I think I have a copy from somewhere , How do you like it???? Is is better to backup data with that than nero??? I have a larger Mp3 and video collection Id like to start archiving.

no not backup. just data dvds.

would zipping it significantly reduce the size?
i mean 120 gig..ouch!

Zipping a mp3 will help little to reduce the file size. MP3's are already highly compressed and it's doubtful you'd be able to compress it even 1-2% than the original file size.

Hmm... I do two backups. One is in RAR, and the other is just plain. RAR seems to handle long filenames and Unicode characters better. I use PAR2 on both to fix small scratch accidents. Time consuming, but I only do it occasionally, and I definetely don't have 120GB of MP3s to backup... 😀

It's a limitation of the filesystem. Nothing you can do about it besides zip/rar everything up, which is obviously a huge pain in the ass.

Of course, you could always just rip them from the original CDs again 🙂

I retag long and pointless track names with just the 'track number' and 'title of the track'... That pretty much keeps nero from cutting them off... I also burn albums as data to cd-r's... On average, I fit about 6-9 albums per cdr - depending on the size of the albums... I also NEVER deal with any mp3s less then 192kbps...

I "store" my mp3's into 700MB Rar Files and then copy those to DVD-R's. This way, I don't have to worry about long file names or anything.

Zip them first?

That's what I do, as my post (look up 2) states. It's an easy way to keep the file names and to break the files up into sizes that can nicely fit a cd or dvd. I use Winrar.
