The Rio Karma supports Ogg, FLAC, WMA, and MP3.

Rio Karma www.riovolution.com - lots of reviews there for this player. I have this and it's great. Good sound, great features... but the reviews all cover this. Needs some kind of case though.

You also forgot to mention it crashes alot.

I don't know about the other MP3 players but my Karma crashes a heck of alot. In fact, this morning I ran down some stairs to catch a train and the Karma began skipping, rebooting and just acting erratic. I had to do a hard reset to get it working again.
That's a shame. It's not indicative of all Karma's though. I'm not going to say mine has never hung, but it has been several months since it happened. I also had a corrupt music database the other day, but that was attributed to RioRad Explorer hanging while transferring then resuming. Overall though, the couple hangs I've had have not been more than minor annoyances that haven't detracted from the other great features of my Karma. I still highly recommend it. Just wish it had a longer warranty.

That's why I always keep a small paper clip with me at all times.

I'm moderately happy with it. I wish I could use the device for storage though. Seems like a waste not being able to.

Also, this thing really needs a case or a clip. That cheap cloth bag really doesn't do it. It would be nice if the battery was user replaceable too. I'm wondering what I'll have to do in a year or two when I need to replace it.

You can use it for storage if you use the rio taxi software. It would've been nice if they had figured out a way to keep the ethernet port on the device so that you didn't need to carry around the dock to use it's ethernet capabilities.
I'm pretty impressed with the battery. I've used mine daily for 1-2 hours for the past 8 months and it still gets a full charge that lasts 12-14 hours. If it goes kaput in the next year or so I won't be too disappointed, I'm sure there'll be something new, smaller and cooler that I'll want to replace it anyways.

The field is getting a little crowded. I haven't owned a Mp3 player for almost 5 yrs now. Maybe it's time to own one again.

Anyone have links to a good comparison/review site for these players?

How can people seriously recommend the Ipod when it has horrible battery life? Try looking at the Nomad Zen Touch. It's got 24 hrs.

Well as I said, what's keeping me from the iPod is Ogg support. Does the Zen Touch have it?

It's like how AOL is the most popular ISP and phlegMTV is so popular with children... there's no rational explanation. The iRiver kicks the iPod's rear end in everything except connection speed (firewire vs. usb2), including, as you mentioned, one of the most important factors - battery life. Those are the only two I've really looked at in-depth, since if I bought one (still on the fence, not sure...) it would have to follow the universal mass storage standard (no sense buying a $300-$400 hard drive that you can't use as a hard drive)

Iriver.
The thing works as a mass storage device so you don't have to deal with stupid drivers.
Otherwise I'd go with the dell.
I know quite a few people who are having problems with thier ipods, and the batteries are crap.

Question about iRiver:
On there website, they have the iRiver H120 - MSRP of $329.99
The only one I can find on Amazon is the iRiver iHP-120 - MSRP of $399.99

Did they come out with a new player that isn't in stores yet?

I just purchased an Ipod Mini a few days ago after looking over a lot of different players. Went with the mini because it was the best compromise between capacity and portibility. Also very well constructed too, which was a plus. Interface on it was very nice as well. I like browsing through the menus better with the wheel on the mini than the sticks and jog dials on other players. It also has a lot of aftermarket support for FM modulators and power adapters for cars so it sort of sealed the deal since I fly and drive so much.

You can drop it in your pocket and forget you have it there. It's not much bigger than my credit card holder. The other players weren't anywhere as forgiving in their size and weight. They pretty much required you to use a belt clip or to keep it in a backpack.

The storage size is right for my needs - 24 hours of music is more than enough.

The only complaint has already been addressed ad nauseum. Battery life is bad. But, for what I use it for, two hours of exercise in the morning, or 8 hours of travel time it fits the bill. Just have to make sure I bring my charger with me.

I was very close to springing for a Dell DJ, but the mini was just so much more portable. To me size was a serious factor so I went with the ipod.

They may have lowered the MSRP..? I recall Newegg had the 20gb model for like $350 and the 40gb for around $450, then lowered each by around $50. Could possibly be the new model, not sure.

This morning, I was really thinking about getting a new 4G iPod 20GB, but after reading reviews and this thread, the iRiver H120 has moved into the lead. The Ogg support helps along with all the extra and I won't have to use iTunes on my PC. (I use iTunes at work on my Mac, but at home I much prefer Winamp.)

I have said this before, but it deserves reiterating.

Not everyone is an ultra-cheap bastard only concerned with price. I picked the iPod because it is aesthetically pleasing, is small, and holds the perfect amount of songs. The iRiver looks like some Honda-driving idiot went crazy with the leftover carbon fiber tape and then stuck some buttons on as an afterthought.

How about:
  • Better battery life?
  • Compatibility with more audio formats?
  • Better audio quality?
  • Cheaper?
  • A more ergonomic chassis?
I'm not saying that the iPod is a bad DAP, I never have -- as a matter of fact it is a wonderful piece of industrial design (along with most of apple's other products) -- but people who think they are the be-all end-all of DAPs are idiots.

I got fed up with iTunes. I like the theory behind it, but it installs processes that run at startup. Processes you can't end from the Task Manager. If it was something important I'd be okay, but why does iTunes automatically install an iPodHelper process when I don't have one? Bleah.

I saw it was going the way of Quicktime. I think I'll get an iRiver. Note to self: scour Hot Deals for good deal on iRiver.

Nor am I, or I'd suggest the Dell or Creative models over the pricier iRiver. I prefer quality & features, most notably battery life and not having to use proprietary software to load songs and/or files onto it. When something has less features at a higher price however, it's hard to ignore the pricetag. I'd also have to disagree on the looks, if anything looks like it belongs to a ricer, it's the iPod.

my problem with iriver is they dont truly care about their customers. i own an iriver, and i performed firmware updates on it when available. fixed bugs, added features, i was happy. then, almost a year ago, they released a firmware that added a better eq, but lowered voice recording and line-in recording capabilities from a 320 kbps max to a 96 kbps max. they said they would have a new firmware upgrade by x-mas of last year that added ogg support and would fix that limit. its almost august, im still waiting. since they've moved on and just introduced a new product line, i aint holding my breath either. they dont care anymore. i just checked their main forum web page, surprise surprise, even their newer models were promised this and that and fixes, and they havent delivered/delayed. i liked iriver before, but when they stopped caring about their customers, i stopped caring about their products. //end rant
