I'm looking to replace my Sansa Fuze 4GB with something else, as the headphone jack is on the fritz after 3 years.

I'm not opposed to an Apple product, but I don't want to be forced to use Itunes to transfer music. Ideally, I'd like to just stick with Winamp.

The idea of a wifi-enabled mp3 player is somewhat appealing to me, if only because I'm still using a fairly dumb phone (and don't plan on getting a data plan anytime in the next 2 years).

I've seen some stuff about the Samsung Galaxy, Cowon players, etc... but I feel to far removed to know what might be good and what might be a dud.

Appreciate the recommendations.
 
I've had a cowon (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...55603835)--yes, it's been a while. The build quality was great, and cowon players are known for great audio quality and battery life. I think the general complaint that people have is that the interface may not be as fancy/intuitive as some other advanced players, but I had no issues.

I currently use a sansa clip+ with a 32GB card, which I love, but I think I'd try a samsung player if I wanted wifi/other advanced features. Alternatively, if I was going cheap, I'd probably get a used android phone, root the sucker, and put a 32GB/64GB microsd in it.

Honestly this isn't a bad idea at all. I have an Infuse 4g that I had to pull the SIM on as I'm not in the united states at the moment. My company provided me with a SIM for use here in Germany but it took a few days so I had to use my phone without any phone features.

Honestly it worked out really well. The infuse has 2gb on the phone + 16gb built in storage + an additional slot for microSD (which I have another 16gb card), so 18GB + whatever microSD you want. Being android, it gives you access to all the android market stuff, and with wifi you still have decent enough connectivity (especially if it isn't supposed to be your phone, like mine was 😛 ).

I'd agree, a previous gen smartphone, maybe one with a good size screen if you're into video, may be the ticket. How about a Dell Streak 5? That 5 inch screen could come in handy, but I have no idea how much they are anymore.
 
I don't know if this helps you, because I bought this specifically for my needs, but the Sony Walkman's battery lasts forever. It doesn't have many bells and whistles outside the FM tuner, but I work out for an hour everyday and I charge it once a month. It also holds a charge really well. When I hurt my ankle, I wasn't able to work out for 5 weeks. When I went to the gym, I forgot to charge it, but when I turned it on, it still had the same bars it had when I left it.

If you are looking for more than just an MP3 player, than you will get bored with this quickly.

They still run OS 1.6 or so. Would not recommend unless you are willing to do custom ROMS, which not everyone is interested in.
 
this may be a dumb question - but if I have a Droid Incredible - no longer on a data plan - can I still update it with Android Apps?

Never thought of using that for an mp3 player - great option for the kids quite frankly!
 
Got me an iPod Shuffle a week back. For $50, it's more than reasonable. Sound is meh, but I just need some reasonable quality noise away from my bookshelfs at home.

I considered the Sandisk and a Sony one, but aesthetics do matter...

I'm picky about sound quality, so I'm partial to dedicated players... and specifically Cowon. My J3 is small, has spectacular battery life, and has amazing sound quality. I've tried listening on all my phones from an iPhone 4 to my SGS2, and NONE of them can touch the SQ of a properly designed mp3 player with a dedicated DAC. The only reason to go with a phone is if you want to only carry one device (which I understand). If you're carrying TWO phones around then IMO you're nuts.
 
I would also second Cowon if quality is of utmost importance. Creative Zen or Sony Walkman come after the Cowon.

I wouldn't look twice at the Galaxy Players. For some reason or another, they don't sound as nice as some Samsung phones.

It seems Samsung stopped using better audio chips after the Galaxy S series of phones.
 
I'm looking for a small 16GB+ player roughly like the older (prior to the touch screen) iPod Nano. I think the Sansa Clip Zip would be okay, if it doesn't sacrifice too much for its cheap price.

I have an old iPod, but I disliked iTunes and didn't install it on my new computer ... 4 years ago.
 
I have an older iPod Nano (non-touch screen) with 8GB ram that I inherited from my wife. I use it exclusively with Winamp and, from a software perspective, everything works perfectly. Things aren't so great from a hardware perspective because the middle touch button is starting to fail. I still use the nano in my car, which can control the nano (thus avoiding the button issue). It's great for that purpose. For walking around music, I bought a Sanza Fuze, which is just fine with a 16GB memory card.
