MP3 Naming

artist/album (folder)

then 01 - TrackName.mp3

I hate those really long names with artist, album, title.....Who wants to read all that crap!

ITunes automatically names them..

Before those days, I had it like this:

.\Artist - Album Name\NN Song Name.mp3

NN is track number...Did it this way to burn to data CD for my car's CD/MP3 stereo

Made scanning for a particular artist easier but still kept the songs in album order...also, there were a limited number of characters that could be displayed at once so it was in my best interest to keep the actual file name short

Now w/an iPod hooked up, there's no point...

[Edit] Well, I just realized that Itunes names them in exactly the same way that I used to..I'm not nearly as cool or original as I thought 🙁

Artist - Album - Song Title.mp3

Probably anal retentive but it organizes nicely. Sometimes I wish I put track number in there but there's no fvcking way I'm going to go back through all my MP3s and do it.

id3 tags have all the other info.

Exactly. Who cares about the album or track number anyway? You're listening to an MP3, not a CD. That would be like organizing all the photos you take on a digital camera into 24-picture "roll" folders. You're living in the past, kid!

...well, maybe some people care, but not me.

For artists where I only have one song, it goes directly into the "My Music" folder and it is named like: Artist - Track Name

For artists where I have more than one song, it goes into an "Artist" folder within "My Music" and tracks are named like: Artist - Track Name.

anyone else anal retentive enough about their music to go through their music and add all the proper album art? there's a program that does it all for you, i know, but sometimes, the album covers don't look right or are wrong, in which case, you need to change them manually.

Artist - Track Title - Track Number

The files are organized in folders named for the Album in a folder named after the Band.

And yes, I get all the album art. Usually, it's from Amazon.

I created my own mysql database with a nice php web interface that displays songs by id3 tags however I choose to have them displayed. File name is really irrelevant to me. And fvck itune, stupid proprietary sh!t.

All albums are arranged in

Artist - Album

format, with files having Track Number - Track Name.mp3 format.

Any spare songs are in the root partition with Artist Name - Track Name format.

I don't do lossless files except for my Loveline and Stern shows. Each year has a folder with each month inside. Then every file is named Loveline-2006-05-31cf - Guest.mp3 Same for Stern, except no guest listing.

If I did, each artist would get their own folder, then each album would get its own folder inside there. Artist-track number-song title.mp3

uhh, who would ever put the track number on it, it's completely useless; just keep it in the tagging for some day when the guy mugging you will let you live if you can tell him what track number the song your listening too is on so and so's cd.

Artist - Track Name FTW

Uhh, because when the songs were written, the artist actually had a plan for the order. I respect the artist.

This goes back to the old days when side 1 had a theme and side 2 was another theme. Sometimes the theme carried over to side 2.

When you listen to the songs on a cd out of order, jesus kills a kitten.

Neither.
I do: Track#-Artist-Title, all lowercased, underscored.

This way inside a directory which is Artist-Album-Year which resides inside the "My Music" folder

And it is largely this way because to my knowledge glftpd servers and their respective zipscripts will not accept files that have spaces in them (and usually need a SFV)

I'm leaning in this direction and then having a directory for each artist, instead of directory for each artist, plus subdirectories for each album. This is mainly for at-a-glance selection.

Tags are already set.

This is how I do it...

1
2

I use Tag&Rename to rename all of my files and folders in that format.

[Drive Letter]:\Artist\Album\Track Number - Track Name.mp3

All the relevant information is in the ID3 tags. That's what they're there for. I have a friend who didn't even bother naming his files, preferring to keep them in one gigantic category and sorting everything through the ID3 tags.

He was weird though.
