---this is the correct answer to your question...a question that seems to come up at least twice a month...cdex uses the lame encoder and it is freeware...
If you're not a "poweruser" in the respect of lossy compression, CDex or Musicmatch are what I recommend. If you're a tweaknut and want control over all aspects of ripping & encoding, EAC & maybe with RazorLame for encoding are what I recommend.
That's what I use... works great - near perfect copies of the CD to MP3. Just use EAC and set it up to call the Lame encoder once it's done ripping the CD. The instructions at r3mix.net tell you exactly how to get it set up.
