Damn.... Microsoft MONOPOLY (if you dont belive it now your a kook) strikes again.

MP3 gone from WinXP, and it's not coming back

Whats next.... hmmmm ....

Imagine this, the year is 2004 and the next version of windows is coming out and an article appears...

"HTML gone from WinSUK, and its not coming back... WinSUK will only display the new Windows Markup Language web pages..... a Micorosft spokesman was commented as saying "WML" is better for the consumer because of its marginal value compared to more open formats so the consumer is clearly demanding this, and besides we own it and you have to pay us to use it"..

"WinSUK will include instructions on how to install third party HTML displayers, which will then allow Windows Mega Monpolizer to display HTML, but quite clearly development is proceeding according to a tried and tested blueprint, and HTML's air supply now stands in some peril."

Coming soon to a computer near you..

WAKE UP PEOPLE!! QUIT FEEDING THE BEAST!... 😀

I think all this means is that the Windows Media Player that comes with WinXP cannot encode to MP3 which really doesn't matter. Most people use a third party software anyway.

Uhmm kind of misleading dont you think? All its saying is that MS wont ship an MP3 ripper with WMP because it would cost too much in licensing fees to make one that could rip a high enough quality. So it doesnt change anything with playing MP3s and you still have to use 3rd party software to rip them, big deal.

This has been known for a while, it's not a big deal.. you can still play MP3s with WMP and rip them with any program.

Oh no!! Windows 95 didn't have it either.. Those communists!!

And since I have always used 3rd party software, this affects me how? Thought so 🙂

I didn't even realize that you could encode MP3's in WMP... could someone tell me how? Also, the fact that it can't encode at high quality doesnt matter- theres a registry hack that'll allow you to go up to 192kbps anyway.

<< I didn't even realize that you could encode MP3's in WMP... could someone tell me how? >>

Not anymore you can't. Microsoft removed mp3 encoding support in a recent build.

This is Microsoft's attempt to get Joe Sixpack and Jane Denimskirt to encode their CD's into wma rather than mp3. The encoding process will be idiotproof so that anyone can do it and get good enough quality. Once a critical mass of such music has been produced by amateur computer users, filesharing networks will see more and more wma tracks. With the rising popularity of wma, Microsoft will be able to convince hardware makers to put wma support into embedded mp3 players. And Digital Rights Management and all those other evil things along with it. That's their battle plan the way I see it.

Damned Man.....Now that you mention it......Win 3.1 didn't have it either!!!:|:| MY GOD......this is an outrage!!!!🙁🙁 I want a refund on my Win 3.1 AND my Win 95......they didn't have MP3!!!🙁🙁 ROFLMAO!!🙂🙂

What an idiot........what, we don't get enough stupid questions aound here from uninformed sources that you have to spew it too?

Guess what??? DaHitman is a LINUX ZEALOT (if you dont belive it now your a kook)😉😉
Stop spreading your crap kiddo'😉 If you don't want to use MS Software fine.....don't......but stop spreading your propaganda......ever hear the sayng "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all"?????😉😉
Do you really feel Linux is slipping that bad that you must come in here and defend 'Mother Linux" at all costs???? Wow......what a loser....🙁🙁

Have you noticed all Linux fans are hardcore idiots?

I know this guy that blames everything on Microsoft; software problems, market problems, why his toaster doesn't work, etc.

Linux is OK if you want to run a router or a server, but not for everyday, Joe and Jane, use. F that. This post just demonstrates how people blow things way out of proportion!

NeMeSi, I assume you're one of those MS zealots? Only those make such stupid generalizations about Linux users 😉😀

There are idiots on both sides.

Has anyone a side-by-side comparison of mp3 vs. wma? Thanks.

Actually,

I'm not, by any means, a MS-zealot. I have Linux on a pc for routing my net connection. Like I said, Linux is sweet for rounting and server/web server app's but not for everyday use. That was my only argument for Microsoft.

I actually use Linux (SuSe Linux 7.1) on a workstation. It's very well suitable for every day use. I can do everything what I can do in Win2k with it.

Well, but like someone else said: "*NIX is userfriendly, it's just picky about who its friends are." 😉

WMA is suprisingly very very good and if you hear how great the audio quality is with Windows Media 8 codecs, you won't go back to MP3. Last night I ripped an Offspring CD in WMP 7.1 in 64 kps and it was twice the quality of a 128 MP3 at more than half the size.

The same goes for Windows Media Video 8 too. Very crisp.

Wow, I never knew someone could be that off the mark. He is probably running around and telling all his friends and co -workers the same thing. People like this actually own and work in computer stores and this reinforces the idea of getting a second opinion.

Hehe.. You had me scared at first with your subject line. :Q I thought that MS had developed a way to make it so you couldn't use mp3's with WinXP.

It's actually a good thing that MS is leaving the mp3 encoder out in WinXP. If you read the article, they say that it wasn't good enough compared to third party encoders. MS was planning on including it anyway and then decided to pull it. I think we ought to thank MS for not including another piece of bloatware that we'll never use.

Everyone that finds one of these stories thinks MS is going to pull all MP3 support from XP. Sorry, it won't happen - their sales would dwindle quite fast.

I agree...if it wasn't going to be a good codec, then they shouldn't include one at all.

<< Still gonna use winamp 3 and 3rd party decoders.. >>

I don't know that I'd want Napster built into my OS, especially since I don't use it now that they have all the filters in place.

Actually, I don't give a sh%t anymore what is in XP. For me, I have windows 2000 professional, server, advanced server, nt4.0 workstation, nt4.0 server, win95b,win98, winME,....I have enough windows to last me long enough, by then, I'll just run 64bit Red Hat on Itanium.
