mp3 Encoding Question

I have a large 22kHz mono wave file, and I would like to reduce the space that it takes.

My first thought was to mp3 it.

I tried to 32-256kbps VBR it using LAME, but it gave me an error, saying that MPEG-1 Layer 3 does not support 22kHz files, only 32kHz, 44.1kHz and 48 kHz files.

What are my options here? Should I use MPEG-2 Layer 3? Does LAME encode into such files?

I could also use some other open format (Ogg Vorbis, for example) but I am hesitant to do this because Ogg is still in beta.

I await your suggestions.

I set the stereo option to default, which I hoped would pick up the mono flag of the wave file and encode accordingly.

Then I set the stereo option explicitly to mono.

In both cases, I got an error listing allowable frequencies for MPEG-I Layer 3, MPEG-2 Layer 3 and MPEG-2.5 Layer 3. MPEG-I Layer 3 only allows for three frequencies, and 22kHz is not among them.
