MP3 and MD portable players?

I've been wanting to get an mp3 player for a while now. I'm thinking of getting one of those sony net md players that can play mp3's. Are there any other companies that make MD MP3 players besides sony? Any feed back would be appreciated

the netmd players don't actually play mp3's... mp3's are converted to atrac and then sent over the the MD. the conversion process is solely based on you cpu.. after it's converted, it transfer pretty fast. the big problem w/ netMD right now is the software.. sony really sucks. i'd have to say avoid it unfortunately.. unless you really like MD's (ie, me ). Real One has a useful plugin that i tend to use now since it works much better.. but i'm not a big fan of realone.

and yes, other companies do make netmd recorders, but I believe it's a sony innovation.. so it's all the same software base.

personally, i think mp3 players are much better. They don't skip and they tend to be smaller. some even have a radio function. Check out the one i have.

neither do MDs.

but in general for the lazy user MP3 players are popular becuase they've always been easier to use and transfer music. they used to suck because of lack of memory but now with cds, minicds, and HDs they're better.

i've always used MDs because i can carry around SO much more music. real time recording sucked but it's better now with netmd (but still not great because of the lousy software). my sister loves her netmd player. but i doubt it will really catch on here in the states.

how's the sound quality of the mp3 players these days? i currently have a rio500 and the quality sux, but i'm satisfied with it, not nearly as good as a cd player, but i like the compactibility...

Those Net MD players don't play Mp3s, you record them onto the MD itself at a High Transfer rate using Atrac 3 encoding. Loses some quality in the transfer depending on which mode you set it at. I personally would prefer a Mp3 player because they are much smaller and dont have any moving parts. Still I wouldn't mind owning an Net MD Player too those are pretty nice. Just my opinion though.

i got a sony net md player (blue) from best buy a few weeks ago, $220 i think...its pretty cool, it converts the mp3s to some other format, i stuck 80 or so songs on it, about 4 hours of stuff, i like it so far, only complaint is my lcd screen seems to be flawed, wasnt at first, but now it has a slight discoloration on it, dont know why...and yes, the sony software does suck, its slow, not all that user friendly, and has some 'check in/out' thing, other than just a simple transfer songs or delete them from the player, anyhow, the md discs are pretty cheap..
also you can record at stereo compression, 80 mins of music, which i dont use, i prefer the lower format due to more songs i can fit on a disc, i cant notice a difference in the two, hell im using headfones, i dont expect much...

it is expensive, and not something i would want to leave around, im very careful with it...i went in to best buy for a $20 walkman and got this

I really want an MD player but I can't justify spending the money (already have an Ipaq for MP3's).
