Mozy Story

There are quite a few negative comments and forums about Mozy. I wanted to share a story:

To give a little background, I am obsessed with reformatting (don't ask). I usually do it every few months. Sometimes it is to switch an OS, other times, because I feel like it.

I decided I wanted to install my MSDN Windows 8 copy today. My C drives contains nothing important. My "X" drive contains everything important. This makes it easy to backup, because I literally copy and paste my entire X drive into an EHD. After the reformat/reinstall is complete, I take this EHD to a family members house and bring back my EHD already there and backup X to it. If I don't do a reformat for a while I will swap them and update the backup.

I had gotten lazy and had only backed up to the EHD at my house, and not swapped it with the other (its backup is over 6 months old). Today I logged into an Ubuntu Live Disc for Gparted to reformat my EHD and backup my X drive. I double checked my on hand EHD (last updated in November) and started to delete the folders as I went through them, seeing there was nothing I needed to do anything special about.

I then open Gparted. Well, my EHD and X drive are the same size, and I am not paying attention...AND I REFORMAT MY X DRIVE. This is right after I got through deleting my November backup. My offsite backup is 6 months old. Normally this would not be a huge deal, but I had my first baby in October and I had pictures saved on my X drive that were not backed up. Also, I had spent 30-50 hours manually organizing old photos also in the last 2 months (labor I did not want to repeat).

I pay $10 a month for 125gb space on Mozy as a last ditch plan (I thought surely with 2 EHDs and my HDD I was safe). I have about 50gb of critical files (mainly photos and other media). I then fill up the rest of the backup with fluff. I uninstall the MozyHome app. I install their MozyRestore app (this was after me wanting to punch my screen trying to update with MozyHome due to how sluggish it is...not realizing they have a standalone restore app). I first restore the baby photos. They all appear...whew. I then move onto the 10000 old photos I had been managing. All downloaded.

So far, everything has downloaded at about 2GB per hour. Not very fast, but it is getting the job done!

So Mozy saved my baby's pictures. It has also taught me to not use Gparted unless I am fully paying attention.

Very cool story. I am glad that worked out for you. The IT guys at work install Mozy on all our machines.
