go to "about:config" in the URL bar. in the filter box, type "editor.single" and change the pasting pref from 1 to 3. Now, when you have:
www.goo
gle.com
on the clipboard and paste into a single-line text box (like, say, the URL bar), it will strip the newline, and paste www.google.com 🙂 This is useful to me when an email app (or anything) breaks a link across multiple lines. (see bug 23485)
 
I don't know... I looked through the comments on various related bugs and the only thing I saw was along the lines of "other programs are equally stupid" and "to be consistent with native OS behavior, we should do it this way". I don't really feel like reading all of the comments in detail 😉.
