Mozilla Firebird.. one feature makes it almost useless!

Download a file with the "open" instead of save to disk option.

If you close the browser the file goes away.

Why would they do such a stupid thing?

If I download a zip file and have it open up instead of saving it when you close the browser the file goes away so you cant do anything with it.

Downloading with Mozilla Firebird is a total waste!

In IE if you do that and close the browser window the download still does what it needs to do and wont delete itself on you if you close the window.

It's only at v0.7...and personally, I think it'll be a long time before it's more handy than IE.

I agree. It has loads of potential, though, and I'll give a very serious look in a few versions. But for right now, I'll stick with IE and Crazy Browser.

Try Avant. It's sort of a shell that IE fits into. It gives you better bookmarking, tabbed browsing, and some other nice features, but under it all you're still using IE.

I use Mozilla FB on my Shuttle... it's nice for casual browsing.

I tried Avant and loved it. However, it has a problem with certain forms and I never could find a way to get it to work.

For example, when browsing these forums using Avant, I could not use the drop-down lists at the top right-hand corner of the messages. When I would select 'View User's Profile' or 'Private Message User', it never would show the appropriate screen. I was using the latest version of Avant, but I had to go back to IE or Crazy Browser to get it to work correctly.

hjo3: Are you having this problem with Avant?

I just use both browsers. If somthing dosent work in firebird a quick copy and paste into ie fixes it.

You just can't beat Tab browsing, imo this feature justifys some of the quirks found in firebird.......like HTH are you supposed to get shockwave to work in it!

I am hooked on firebird, works great for me, if i decide to open something, ill leave the window minimized to keep myself from having a temper tantrum.

That is a feature one of the best things about mozilla is flash doesn't come preinstalled. I would also like a way to open .exe files downloaded with mozilla without have to save to disk it just waste so much time to save the files to disk.

i use firebird as my main browser. i fell in love right off, and after a little tweaking, it's the best browser i've ever used.

custom skinning really easy, lots and lots of tweaks built right in for user customization, client side style sheets (disabling adds.. like anandtech's banner and side adds for instance 😉)

I just did this with IE. I clicked open with this file: http://chessbrain.net/client20407-01-win.zip and then closed the winzip window. The file was not anywhere to be found on my computer. What do you do?

its in your temp cache or internet temp cache.

Also make sure you get the IEVIEW extension for Firebird. It puts a selection in your right-click menu to open a link in IE. So if you come upon a page that doesn't look right or work in FB, right click the link to it and open it in IE. No more copy/pasting...
