I use my 2gb Sansa and ear buds (nothing too expensive) and it's loud enough to where I don't have to turn it up all the way.

Get a quieter lawn mower. Reel mowers are very quiet.

I got some noise isolating ones a while ago that I typically don't like because they give me a clogged ear feeling but I do use them when mowing and they work great.

Just used them yesterday doing my yard.
