Are you from a large metropolis area? I've lived here 10 years, and have no idea where the DeVry campus is. And which mall? There's about 10 in the Phoenix metro area.

Speaking of "metro", that seems to be where it's located, by the Metro Center. 19th ave. and Dunlap. Decent area. A few places to hang out, but you'll definitely be driving a ways to the east side of town (Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler) on the weekends.

The Phoenix area (made up of several adjoining cities) is about 3 million. It just surpassed Philly as the 5th largest city in America. Where'd you get less than a million? Mesa alone has 350,000.

There's 10 malls in a city of less than a million people?

I'd guess there are more than 10. I can think of 5 within easy driving distance of me. Phoenix had 1.3 million people in 2000. That's not counting the cities that are part of the metropolis such as Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, etc.

Mesa alone is around 500,000 people. So the entire area is probably around 3 million people.

I've been to Chandler, Scottsdale Fashion Center, Fiesta (closest to me), and Superstition Springs.

There are some nice apts across the street from Devry. I can't remember what they were called, but at least the gates worked there (people kept breaking ours at the apts I used to live in).

Let's see, the traffic pretty much anywhere in central Phoenix sucks. It'll take forever to get anywhere in central Phoenix during the daylight hours. Given that we've got the highest rate of car theft in the country, if you've got a nice car or anything nice on it, make sure you've got a good alarm (and don't be surprised if anything goes missing).

Jobs can be pretty easy to come across here (if you're not looking for a high paying job). There's lots of callcenter work in the area. If I remember right, Safeway, USAA, Discover and Master Card have some callcenters in the area. I don't know if MCI still has a callcenter in the Colonade area (20th st & Camelback).

Hopefully that helps a bit more

There is a thai dish they serve that I get almost every time I go there. I like to sit at the bar and watch the people outside near the vallet parking. The dish is peanut chicken? I'm not sure of the name but it's a peanut sauce with long thin noodles, chicken, and peanuts. Great stuff. hmmm... I might have to go back and get some soon. 🙂

I do wish things would stay open longer. Besides bars and a few restaurants, it's hard to find anything open past 9pm. Pretty lame. We hang out at Barnes some nights, just because it's open late.

One more question... Here in Texas there is a 8.25% State Sales Tax and there are no other taxes, what are the taxes in Phoenix?

State is 7.2%. Some places add in city tax...and i have no idea what that is around here.

Um...yes there is. Tons of call center work here. Go to any staffing agency in AZ and that's a majority of what they hire for.

I don't live in Phoenix, but I have relatives there and I've spent quite a bit of time there and in Las Vegas, which has similar weather.

Yeah, it's hot, but it's honestly not that bad. We played tennis when it was about 106 and it wasn't bad.

I know it's cliche, but the low humidity really does make it much more tolerable.
I would take 110 degrees in Phoenix over 90 in New Orleans or St. Louis any day of the week.

If you are not a golfer, I suggest you learn. Nowhere else has such perfect weather for golfing for the 9 months of the year when it isn't summer.

Yeh, bring a jar of vasoline when you go to the insurance agent to switch over your car insurance.

I went from paying $1200 a year in Iowa to $1400 every 6 months. BAH!

Besides that, the speed limit signs are actually showing the minimum speed that you should be traveling. Most people do in excess of 50% above the posted speeds on the freeways. Regardless of what people say, 110+ is still HOT. I just moved down here a month ago and it's still a shock.

It's an easy town to get around in...assuming they haven't shut down any major highways (101, 202, I-10ect) before you learn alternate routes. Besides that most major North/South & East/West roads run the entire length of the area through all the cities. You get on a main road and you can follow it till you know where you are. Which is nice. The street signs on main drags, in Tempe at least, are very helpful too because they actually point the direction of where they are going (N,S,E,W).

There's a billion places to spend your money shopping and enough golf courses to play a different one every week of the year.

Oh and it's a pretty common sense thing - don't keep anything of ANY value in your car. Phoenix is pretty much the theft capital of the world.
