Quite honestly, no...but it's not like I can prepare myself for it, so I'll just have to deal. It's a big move for me, having lived in Michigan my entire life. I always had Chicago and New York in mind, but the job, company and co-workers are all pretty ideal and Phoenix is still a big city with what a big a city offers, so I'll give it a shot.

I'm looking at this listing right now:

House rental

It seems a little underpriced...the location is perfect for me and if I need to I can try to find a roommate later. I've been considering having an extra room to write off as a home office, but with 3BR, that's a bit excessive. But anyway, is that area decent? Are there preferred areas and areas of higher crime that I should know about? For instance, anything like an Oakland County of Detroit :p

its underpriced for a reason. that area isnt the best in the world, and just last week there was a home invasion that killed someone. well, it was a mile south of there, but still. i work literally a mile north of that house and i can tell you that you probably dont want to live there. go farther east. dont stop until you pass priest. hell, pass hardy if you want to. hardy area isnt too bad, id live there. im looking for a house in tempe also right now, and hardy is about the farthest west ill go.

Lots of great information, thanks...hanoverphist, I appreciate your comment especially. Even though my selection seems to be smaller in Ahwatukee, I haven't found anything that can be the commute to work. My office will be off of Priest and Elliot, but does anyone know of any houses or condo/apartment complexes near there to the East? I haven't seen any :(

ya if you go north on priest there is a grove parkway that is lined by apartments/ condos. also, farther east there are condos north of elliot on kyrene, as well as some all the way to rural. south? there are a few here and there but no real serious areas. in ahwatukee (where i lived through high school) there are a few complexes, south of elliot on 51 st as well as a large complex on 48th st north of elliot. if you go down to warner there are a ton of apartments on 48th st past that shopping center. i really know that area, lived there for years. used to ride dirt bikes in the fields where all those stores got built on elliot. lots of houses for sale/ rent around there too, but to the east not in ahwatukee.

The company's going to fly me out for a few days to look for housing...I guess it might come down to just driving around and seeing what's available. Are you familiar with the Serafina complex?

http://www.mark-taylor.com/serafina/index.asp

He owns another property which is close and at the upper end of my range, but Serafina has a couple of available units, is within walking distance to work and large enough for me.

Those places arent bad. Where you are working is a good area with a lot of stores (Costco, Ikea, Wal-Mart, etc etc) so you wont ever have to drive really far.

I didn't check to see how much rent is at those places, but you shouldn't pay more than $800 for a 1 bedroom. Mark Taylor communities are all over the phoenix area, so you know its a legitimate company who will take care of you if any problems arise.

I think you are going about it the right way finding a place within walking distance to your job. From after Halloween to right about now, Arizona has perfect weather.

Yeah, and the fact that he's had one of the few well-made websites definitely gets more points from me. The rent would be $700-800 and sq ft around 750-800 as well. I need a large main room for my audio setup but other than that I don't really care. From my short time driving around that area, I saw the Cost Co (w00t!), IKEA (w00t!), Wal-Mart and other stores so that'll be great for moving in. After that I'll have to find the smaller more gourmet grocery stores but that's all just details.

Mark Taylor are good properties. There's a nice one off of Priest & Baseline in Tempe as well.

So.....what job are you getting here?

I just checked out your profile and saw that you are from Troy. I have two friends that live down here from Troy, went to Troy high school.

Tempe is a great place to live, its a younger community and everything you need is really within a short driving distance. They are ever expanding on their bus lines, so you might be able to use the bus one day.

Some social things I would recommend:

4th of July, New Years, and Oktoberfest at Tempe Town Lake
First Fridays downtown
Mill ave. every weekend

Some food I would recommend:

Lolos Chicken and Waffles
Chino Bandito (THIS PLACE IS THE SHIT!)
Filibertos (Greasy Mexican food)
Any mexican place with "bertos" at the end
Mastros Ocean Club (Go there on a Thurs - sun and revel in all the cougars)

I know! I can't wait to go and buy my first mobo/CPU combo and make all my Michigan friends jealous. :D I plan on building a quad core computer this year anyway, should be fun.

This is my first time ever really moving out...where does one find nerds and geeks to hang out with? It probably won't be too difficult making friends at bars and clubs and stuff, but I can only stand those types for so long. I need people to play Guitar Hero with, board/card games, watch movies, D&D, etc...ah well, all part of the process.

for gaming activities check out Phoenix ConGames at conevents.com and other local sci-fi conventions.

Priest & Elliot is considered "south Tempe" close to the Chandler/Mesa city boundaries and is usually a nice area to live.

why go there when he is going to be close to serranos on guadalupe and rural? their food makes the bertos catrittos taste like 3 day old taco bell. red devil pizza on mill and southern is a must try as well. going south you have a bunch of new trendy places to try out as well.

You're going to melt.

:D Yes, this is entirely possible. But I'll do my best to get used to it...otherwise I'll just stay inside when it's light out and play with my toys.

cheezy321, 2 friends from Troy? That's pretty interesting considering how small this city is. I went to Athens...I'd like to get together after I move down there, it'd be nice having some common ground.

As for why I'm moving down here...it's a long story, but the job itself is an instructional designer for a facilitation company. I'm on the BMW/Mini/VW team and we also have Honda, Acura, Smart and Porsche.

It'll be a nice place to work. :)

Quick question...what are the major banks in the area and who are the big cable providers?

Tons of banks...M&I, Chase, etc etc.

Cable/Internets: Cox Communications

Now you're coming from the midwest and I'm guessing your job is pretty good so this might not concern you....Car Insurance is outrageous (double many midwestern state rates), vehicle registration is outrageous, and electricity from cooling in the summer is outrageous. Just a heads up :)

You have Chase, that's all I needed to hear. As for insurance and registration and all that...joy :p

So, you might have seen that I've made a few Phoenix threads recently...well, pending any unforeseen hiccups during negotiations (got the offer yesterday), I'll be moving to Phoenix in June. I've already started looking at craigslist and rentals.com, but any suggestions on where to live would be great.

I'm looking for a condo/townhouse, home rental (shared is fine, with one person) or loft. I found a place downtown which looks amazing, but I don't know if it's still available. I'll be working in Tempe, right off of the 60 and the 10, so I'd like to know the flow patterns of highway (and local) traffic, if that's possible.

Any suggestions are welcome, I have a lot to learn in not a lot of time!

But first...I'm off to the Frankenmuth World of Beer Expo :D

Mesa or Chandler would be the best places to live near Tempe if you want a short commute. I used to live in both of those cities, and both are fine places to live.

It has been 10 years since I have lived in the area, so I can't tell you what traffic patterns are like today. Both Highway 60 and Interstate 10 were really busy highways back then as I am sure they are now.

If you can't find a home in Tempe, Chandler or Mesa have a lot of amenities and shopping and have a lower crime rate than Phoenix proper.

good news is your new AZ drivers license won't expire until you're 65yo.

I liked Mesa the few times I was out there. The heat is the worst part and no beach.

PLENTY of things to do and lots of 20-30 somethings.

Nothing, but depending on the time of year, finding housing can be a bitch in Tempe. It is much easier to find affordable housing in Chandler or Mesa.

Arizona does too have a beach, it's artificial and has no seagulls or smelly seaweed.

It's a "waterpark" called Big Surf.

There's a lot of tweakers, gambling addicts, and drunks in the Tempe area, so make sure you don't leave anything valuable in your car, as there are a lot of car break-ins and theft.

Also be aware, native Arizonans are some of the most unfriendly people you'll encounter, but fortunately there are a lot of people from other states who live in Arizona, so you can avoid the native riff raff. There's a lot of 30k millionaires in their leased
BMW/Lexus/Mercedes trying to one up each other in Scottsdale.

Even worse, there's a lot of California-rejects who couldn't afford to retire in their own state living in the Phoenix area, yet they're there to remind you how great California is.
