Moving to NYC ... any thoughts on Roosevelt Island?

MrChad

Lifer
The apartments seem really nice there (although they?re a bit small), and the island itself seems sort of isolated and safe. Prices aren't much more than Upper East or Upper West Side. Any thoughts?

You will have to ride the Tram to get to work everyday. Good luck when the power goes out and terrorists hold you hostage. Ever see Die Hard?

Nope tram. You seen Spiderman, right?

EDIT: Oh heck, the F does go there. And I rode the F for two years 🙂 Never went above Rock Center tho...

My ex gf lived there and it was kind of dark, boring and very isolated. I fvckin hate it.
East Village is where it's at although I recently moved out of EV and live in Gramercy now.

Gramercy is nice. I live in the Village and I love it. Lots to do, plenty of people out. I looked at the UWS a lot, I almost lived in a brownstone near the park. It's pretty safe and rent is a lot cheaper then the village. The UES is even cheaper but with a lot less to do.

If you're scared of Manhattan, you might as well consider moving to Hoboken, Williamsburg or Astoria.

Isn't all of NYC either dark and boring, or dark and dangerous?

No.

I see you're from Seattle ... Well, I just moved from Seattle, and you should know walking around after 9pm is no picnic. Pioneer Square, Capital Hill and the U district are all filled with drug addicts and bums at night who love to hassle you.

Most of NYC is brightly lit at all times, mostly safe and a blast to live in. I do miss my Seattle bands and the humidity and heat are hard to get used too. Otherwise, I'm glad I got out of Seattle and the PNW for awhile.

<--- Lived in Seattle, Portland, Victoria and Salem before moving to NYC.

I've been in Harlem around 4Am in the morning. Seriously, not really dangerous at all

hehe. I (seriously) thought about moving to Harlem for awhile. my only problem with it is that it's so far from the areas of Manhattan where I hang I may as well be in the burbs (and I could get a bigger and nicer place across the river for about the same money).

it's not about safe vs dangerous, it's about smart vs stupid.

Astoria isn't the community it once was, & has grown more dangerous. I live on the good side of Queens Blvd., in Elmhurst. As you get farther into Maspeth & beyond, you'll find less & less transportation though. We have the subway/bus/blvd./malls all within walking distance, yet still far enough away to sleep at night.

I've been to Gotham a couple times for that one seafood place; spooky.

Would it be wrong to assume that the only knowledge you have of NYC was learned from Hollywood?

BTW, I?ve heard the paranoid use the word "dangerous" when describing NYC, but "boring"? Yea, I suppose it could be boring if your idea of a good time is hogtying steer.
