Hey guys. I'll be migrating to Canada in September (provided there are no dramas between now and then). I'm originally from the States until three and a half years ago, now I'm in Sydney. Anyway, the wife and I will be moving to the Waterloo-Kitchener area (Cambridge, Guelph, etc.) Just would like some info on the area:

Where are the neighbourhoods to avoid? What are the good neighbourhoods for kids to grow up in? What are typical utility bills like? (Sydney electric bills were quite a shock when I first got one). How long of a drive is it to Toronto, Niagara, and London. Hmmm. What else? Anything else you can tell me about the area would be great. Thanks.

You'll find a few of us from K-W frequent ATOT. :)

Anywho, to address your questions:

Where are the neighbourhoods to avoid?
The only really questionable area to avoid would be downtown Kitchener.

What are the good neighbourhoods for kids to grow up in?
Anywhere outside of downtown Kitchener.

What are typical utility bills like?
My utility bills for a 1800 sq.ft. (including the basement) townhouse are about $150.00 in total for natural gas, hydro and water on average. A bit higher than that in the summer b/c of central air conditioning, but a bit lower in the winter.

How long of a drive is it to Toronto, Niagara, and London.
1 hour, 1.5 hours, and 1 hour respectively.

If you haven't already, check out the local newspaper here as there is TONS of local information and the paper itself is quite good.

If you have any more questions, let me know, or you can drop me a PM.

Welcome to K-W! :D

Thanks. Something else I forgot to ask...

Where can we stay for a week or so while looking for an apartment/townhouse without going broke?

*ahem*

Sum 41 is actually from Ajax, not from Kitchener. It's over a hour and 45 minutes from Kitchener. ;)

As for places to stay in Kitchener, what are you looking for? There is a Holiday Inn and a Radisson that are reasonably priced, and you should be able to book them over the web.

If you are looking for a really nice and reasonably priced apartment, I could recommend this property management company. All of their buildings are well run, and very new (2 are brand new) and the rent is pretty reasonable.

N8Magic,

You've proven a big help so far. I have already checked out DrewLo and a few other rental agencies. My dilemma is whether to go for a 2-bedroom apartment or look for a 2 or 3 bedroom townhouse. I've got two small kids (10 months and 3 years old) and I hope to buy (or build) a house in 3 to 5 years time. My wife will easily find work (BVSc in Veterinary Science, MSc in Virology, and PhD in Immunology) - She knows the U of Guelph from a Poultry Science Conference some years ago. I am just a lowly musician, but should be able to find something in the area. There are three universities within Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph, and several more to the east (Toronto, York, McMaster) and west (Western Ontario), and even a long stretch to Brock U in St. Catherines. Once we get established, we can then decide where the most convenient location would be for us. My parents went through the area a couple of weeks ago and have mailed us a fari bit of reading material (maps, renter's news, a Guelph Mercury, etc.)

Other questions I've developed in the meantime:

Who are the utility providers? (phone, cable, water, electric, gas, etc.)
Who are the Auto Insurance Providers?
Who are the Major Banks?
Who are the good internet providers? (I've looked at www.canadianisp.com) Since broadband in Australia is so expensive, I'm looking forward to coming out of this time warp of dial-up hell! Any recommendations there?
The wife would like to know what the shopping is like. We have seen that there are a number of factory outlets and farmer's markets, which we are looking forward to. Thanks. You've been a big help so far. I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.

Well, if you are considering one of the Drewlo properties for an apartment, I can tell you that the suites are actually quite large and may fit your busy lifestyle better than a townhouse. I say this because all of the recent developments in townhouses around here are mostly townhouses that are up for sale, and most of the rental townhouse complexes are so-so when you compare them with the newer apartment developments. Thats not to say there aren't any nice rental townhouses out there, but it may be more difficult to find one than an equivalent apartment. If you are considering something, you can run it by me and I can give you the lowdown on the neighborhood if you like.

As for your other questions:

Who are the utility providers? (phone, cable, water, electric, gas, etc.)
Phone service is provided by Bell Canada, cable is provided by Rogers, water and gas are locally owned by the city (Kitchener Utilities), and hydro service is from Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro. Seeing as you are accustommed to Telstra prices, things here should be a pleasant surprise. :p

Who are the Auto Insurance Providers?
There really are sooooo many to choose from... personally I go through a local company (based in Guelph) called The Co-operators Insurance for both my home and auto insurance, and their rates and service are exceptional.

Who are the Major Banks?
The major banks are Royal Bank, TD Canada Trust, CIBC, Bank of Montreal and ScotiaBank. I personally use a part of CIBC called President's Choice Financial, they're kind of nice because their bank accounts have no fees, and their personal loans and mortgage rates are quite good.

Who are the good internet providers? (I've looked at www.canadianisp.com) Since broadband in Australia is so expensive, I'm looking forward to coming out of this time warp of dial-up hell! Any recommendations there?
The two major national isp's are Sympatico and Rogers Cable. There are really no pockets of Kitchener that don't have one of these high speed options available, so if you want broadband, you got it! The largest local provider is Golden Triangle and they also offer DSL service. For a ~128k up/1.5Mb down connection, expect to pay about ~$40-50CDN per month.

The wife would like to know what the shopping is like. We have seen that there are a number of factory outlets and farmer's markets, which we are looking forward to.
There is a large regional mall in Kitchener called Fairview Park Mall with all of the chain stores and a bunch of other ones. It's considered the areas best mall. One that just reopened after MAJOR renovations is the Cambridge Centre, and it is set to rival Fairview Park in terms of number of stores and amenities (the mall even has an ice rink! :Q). For anything that you can't get at one of these regional malls, you can surely get at Square One in Mississuga or in Toronto at the Eaton Centre. If you like farmers markets, there is a big one in St. Jacobs (just north of Waterloo) and the city of Kitchener is building a HUGE one right in the middle of downtown Kitchener, and it is set to take up an entire city block and be the focus of downtown.

If you have any more questions, fire away! :)

I'll be there in time for Oktoberfest. My surname is Hoffman and I grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch country. You'd better believe I will be there for Oktoberfest. N8Magic, you've given me a lot of homework to do. Thank you so much. I'll be in touch when I finish my assignment. :)
