Moving the family to Italy in about a month, and I've got to prepare for the voltage change.

I've been looking at some voltage transformers online but the terms "low cost" and "good transformer" do not seem to go hand in hand.

I was thinking of buying a few of these UPSs in place of transformers. Do you guys think it'll work? I've only got a few gadgets I want to run off it (my uber Philips DVD player, audio receiver, printer, sub woofer, ect) all of our major appliances are luckily dual voltage.

As for lights, kitchen gear, and bathroom stuff we're just planning to get 220 stuff over there.

Any inputs? Comments? From those that have moved between 220 and 110?

I doubt that a UPS like that is meant for continuous voltage conversion...but then I have no idea if that's really true.


You could also stock up on a bunch of these. 😀

thanks for the reply and linky Jeff, do you know how reliable... and uh fire prone those transformers are? I'm kind worried with all of horror stories I've read on the net about combustibly hot transformers.

But aside from the "safety" concern with small transformers , I'm also a cheapo when it comes to the knowledge that a transformer is more or less always on when hooked into the grid. I was thinking an UPS would mitigate this a little.

My recollection is the close to this.

Everybody bought one new one initially. After that, the rest were bought used from the folks moving back home.
