Moving to Canada

Hello! Haven't posted here in a while. However, these forums have influenced my life greatly since it was the place where I learned of the opportunity to come to Canada. I remember a couple of years ago I posted here how I didn't like it where I lived (I'm in Russia) and someone pointed me to the idea of immigrating to Canada. It appeared to be a real possibility.

So I guess all I have to do now is to quit my present job and become yet another Russian to set his foot on Canadian soil. I have no illusions on what I should expect. I think the most challenging task for me would be to last in Canada as long as possible so that I wouldn't have to get back to Russia which I would hate to do. In order to do that I would have to get a job. I'm very much stressed because of the fear of ending up in a cardboard box on the street (I know how cold it is in Canada). However, I'm jumping on this opportunity witout a second thought. I'm posting this to say thanks to MartyTheManiak (?) who 'showed me the way'.

Good luck. There is a pretty sizeable Russian immigrant population in the part of Montreal my wife is from. What part of Canada do you plan on moving to?

Thats awesome and it takes quite a lot of courage to do something like that. I admire this change you're making. If you dont mind me asking, how old are you and what do you do?

Toronto might be a little...odd, for someone new Canada. I suggest comming to London, afterwards. It's about, an hour or two away, IIRC.

Heh I think that is why my application to immigrate to Montreal "got lost" when my wife and I got married.

Come to edmonton. We have very little french community, great weather (cept winter is up to -40 C) and it is a beautiful city. Not to mentions that we are the richest province in canada, Have a massive job market and very little taxes.

Toronto might be a little...odd, for someone new Canada. I suggest comming to London, afterwards. It's about, an hour or two away, IIRC.

I also thought of going to some not-so-big town. Guess that's what I will do.

Well, look at it this way... you're in publishing (very close to my own field), so which one of the great(er) Canadian cities has a market in your field?

You can really count your possible destinations using the fingers of your two hands:

Ottawa - I'm here, it sucks, 80& of jobs are federal government, good luck in finding something decent
Toronto - big and full of opportunities, but could be quite overwhelming, and it's rather expensive
Montreal - French is a must, very cold in the winter
Quebec City - see above
Calgary - ?
Edmonton - ?
Halifax - Not doing too well economically
Vancouver - expensive living, no idea about opportunities.
Satellite cities of the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) - your mileage may vary.

Have I missed anything here, my fellow Canucks?

Anyone wants to add more info regarding the publishing industry?

Social safety net FTW!

On a serious note, congrats on moving to Canada. Its a great country to live in and explore (something for everyone). Toronto is huge so I don't think you will have any problems meeting up with people from Russia (if thats what you want). They might also have some local Russian language papers that you can try for a job. I believe a lot of Ukrainians moved to (Manitoba, Sasketchwan - Don't know which one) but I don't know how big the language/ cultural divide is between Russia and the Ukraine.

there is a sizeable russian community in Toronto, so it might be easier to fit in.

Then you can consider trying other parts of Canada.

For you -40C is stay home and get into the fetal position cold, for a Russian -40C is "hmm, it's a little breezy today, better put on a shirt" cold.

Ukranian? Ever been to Guelph? Pretty large Ukranian bunch there. Them and Italians.

never been to Guelph.

We have a number of Ukranians here. I don't speak the language, though. :(

London is still a nice place. :D

Vancouver or Victoria is the best Insurance against freezing in a cardboard box! :D

Have no idea about the publishing Industry, but Job prospects are very good everywhere right now, but Alberta and BC are booming like crazy(especially the Construction Industry).

We've had hundereds of immigrants from eastern europe come this way in the last 5 years. Quite a few Russians included in that number. We're only a city of around 10,000 but probably 1,500-2,000 of those are those immigrants that have recently moved here.
