Moving Sticker Shock

Moving ~400 miles, been selling off old furniture, trashing and/or garage selling other stuff we don't need or use, Goodwilling some more, still have according to estimates ~6500 lbs to move. Amazing how much crap you can accumulate in 20 years.

I got 4 moving estimates so far. They range from $3300. to $3800. for self-pack. All of the estimates have a fuel surcharge on them. It's ~15% of the estimate. How exactly do they calculate this? I know it's somehow based on the DOE diesel fuel price per gallon. http://www.eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/

Did the Penske truck rental thing a few years ago when I had to clean out my dad's house after he passed. He had 50 years of accumulated crap. Never again.

U-haul it. I get $389 rental plus approx. $160 in fuel (assuming $4 gas and 10 MPG) for a 1-way from WV to Philadelphia (arbitrarily picked place ~400 miles away).

use the money you save to hire a couple of guys at each end to load and unload the truck for you while you sit in the shade sipping lemonade. Seriously, college kids work cheap.

Unless you're not able to do it yourself, moving it yourself is a cheap way to go. I moved 1300 miles in a Uhaul and spent about ~$1000 doing it.

Uhauls suck though, no cruise control and that was a long drive.

Price out PODS - I really like their concept.

Always used Ryder,Uhaul/Budget truck rentals. Even moved 2000 miles in a 26' Ryder with a Car Hauler once.

UHaul will set you up with contract help. I paid $50/hr for 2 backs to move. Stuff was originally packed in storage unit and unloaded into apartment. 6 months later, went apt to house. You can pack up yourself or again spend $$ to have a couple gals spend 3-8 hours packing for you.

Hot is in the mind of the viewer. I expect tbat one can request a certain age group. Does not ensure that you get such. Remember, you are paying them by the hour. And usually the beds are already dismantled.
