So Saturday morning I am moving back to my good old town after a long contract with an employer that is now finally over. I had some good times over there I made a lot of friends and definitely picked up a good deal of useful skills, but now I need to go back to my Univ and finish my degrees.

Anyways, I do not have much furniture as I was living temporarily in that city, but instead I do have boxes and boxes of books, computer parts in addition to bags of clothing and what not.

Now my options for moving are as follows:

1- Use my daily driver, a one Honda Accord coupe back and forth.
Please note that my Honda doesn't have a hitch, and installing a hitch would cost me north of $140 and on top of that I have no time to get one installed even if I wanted to.

2- Rent a 10' U-Haul truck in addition to a U-Haul 4 wheel auto trailer on which my Honda will reside.

Let's examine the first option:

I have already made reservations with U-Haul for Saturday morning, however I can cancel it before Saturday without any cost to me.

a- I will be driving a 4 cylinder non VTEC 2dr 5 Speed Manual Honda Accord filled to maximum capacity, driving up to 3 times back and forth on a high speed turnpike.
b- My Accord gets 26-28 MPG, but I am sure this is to drop significantly with the excess load.
c- I will need to make about 2-3 trips to get all my stuff moved.
d- The distance / trip is 140 miles.
e- This will add a wear of anywhere between 560 to 840 miles to my car.
f- I will be very uncomfortable driving during the trips.
g- Getting stuff out and in to my Coupe will be PITA big time.
h- Cost of gas only will be between $ 60 and $ 90+, that's without accounting for other stuff too like time consumed, and wear on vehicle, tires, engine, oil, breaks and so forth.

Total Direct Cost without accounting for wear= $60 to 90+
Time needed to transport stuff= 9 driving hours+

Second option: U-Haul

a- The V8 U-Haul 10' is exactly what I need it has the towing power, and the space for my stuff, here are the specs.
b- The cost for a one way rental is $98 that covers 153 miles mileage (40 cents for each extra mile), a 2 day rental.
c- The U-Haul Auto trailer costs $35 to rent
d- The Truck is certified by U-Haul to be able to carry my stuff and tow my car in the trailer at the same time. Although the max recommended speed is 45MPH for the trailer, but I am very sure that is to just avoid lawsuits, I think I can go 60-65 MPH without having to worry, right?
e- I will be able to make a one way trip to my town and drop the U-Haul equipment there.
f- The MPG of the truck is 12.
g- Fuel Tank Capacity is 35 gallons.
h- Cost of gas for a one way trip will be about $40 maximum
i - Optional insurance on the truck that covers %100 of damage to it is $28
j- Optional insurance on the auto trailer that covers %100 of damage to it s $16

Total Cost Estimate without tax but with insurance= 98+35+40+28+16= $217
I do not know if my insurance company covers rentals like this and what type of coverage I get, I need to check with my Agent tomorrow.
Total Cost Estimate without tax but without insurance= 98+35+40= $175

Time needed to transport stuff = 2.5 driving hours+

Now wise people of ATOT, what say you :)?

The only question you need to ask is of yourself.. is saving over $100 worth all the extra time, driving, and discomfort?

seriously the U-haul man. I moved to another city roughly 10min from my house. I used my F150 and my dads F150...SUCKED! Was an all day project and just wore me out major. One load one trip FTW!

The one load trip is definitely tempting.

Actually me and my dad were chatting on the phone and he insisted that he drives over there and help me out by sharing the load in his car which would pretty much make it a one trip for me and him, but I just couldn't allow myself to make my 68 years old man make that long of a trip and lift weights just so that I can save some dollars, I just wouldn't feel good about myself :(
So I lied to him and told him that I can't withdraw my reservation with U-Haul :(

Try Budget truck rental. If you have a longer distance to cover budget comes out ahead because they have lower per mile charge (but higher base rental). U Haul on the other hand is good for short distance because the base rental is low (but higher per mile charge).

I was going to make this suggestion. Also, I'm pretty sure you get a little more of a discount from Budget by going through their sponsored link in Google. That is, Google "budget truck rental" and then click on that link up top that says "sponsored link". You'll end up on a page that says it'll save you 10% on the rental.

Problem is that I don't think Budget Truck rentals have the car hauler...

Thank you, he has been and still is a good father to me, but I hope he doesn't find out that I lied to him about it, he might think that I didn't want him around because he would be incapable oh helping, which is not true, but you know people at that age start doubting that others don't think they are useful or capable of doing work, but it's completely not about that in this case, I just wanted to save him unnecessary inconvenience that's all.

Thanks for suggesting Budget, however it turns out they would charge me more for the move I am making, the 10' truck costs the same, however no 10' truck is available in my area for a one way trip, and second thing, the dolly costs $25 at U-Haul and the car trailer costs $35 which is what I am getting, meanwhile it costs $59 just for the dolly at Budget, so I doubt there is any competition there.

Anyways I am open to suggestions all the way until Friday afternoon :)
