Moving picture ads added to the 360 dash

I don't care because I don't see anything wrong with ads. I don't have an adblocker on the internet, because I understand that site admins really rely on ads to help them out with their site. Same with MS, though they don't 'need' any more money, it's still the same mindset to me.

Bombarded is an exaggeration. When I'm playing a game or using the guide I am not bombarded by anything. The only thing I have to endure is moving the right stick up once to get to My Xbox, or up a little more and over to get to Netflix.

All of these ads are on one bar in the dashboard. Move up one and they're gone.

In principle I certainly don't like this idea but in the grand scheme of things it's not worth getting worked up over until it invades my gaming experience.

It's funny how people started bitching about this now, both here and on other gaming forums I frequent. I saw an ad with video and audio for the Taking of Pelham 123 a month ago or so. Hardly the end of the world like some people make it out to be, even on a paid service like XBL.

Indeed. We've all seen how much flash can annoy people with advertising and if silverlight is a competitor for flash, there needs to be a very strict set of standards and limitations in place for ads. The day an ad splashes across the screen and restricts me from doing what I intend to do or an ad starts playing annoying sounds without my consent is the day I cancel LIVE and mod my box to play backups. Maybe I've been lucky up to this point and just haven't been one of the people that had ads with sound and animation delivered to them but I'm not kidding here.

I've played fair up to this point. I paid for my box, I paid for all of my games, I pay for my subscription to XBL, and I'm not going to sit here and let MS use up my time as a source of extra income just because I support them and the developers making games for their system.

Nobody ever said ads were a feature (yes, I know you're being facetious). We're just saying they are a non-issue. Hell, they were around long before the NXE showed up.

Sony makes more money off of me by NOT making me sit through ads constantly. They only show up in the PSN Store, which is where I want them. I have bought a lot of stuff in the PS Store, and, to date, I've bought nothing on XBL, although I've had the system since launch (well, I've had the system 3 times, since 2 of them have died and had to be RMA'd).

I use my PS3 for gaming and movies, not to shop for a cell phone or deodorant.

So where exactly does the 360 Dash make you sit through ads constantly?

They show up under one channel in the dash that you can quickly flick past. At no point are you forced to sit through anything.

Paying my $2.30/month for Gold service is much more worth it than the free PSN service. Oh, I forgot, you can bowl in Home for free. Have at it buddy, I won't fight you for a lane. Not sure what you do that makes it worth it. I grew up playing computer games and then graduated to consoles. I'm used to services being free. But to each his own I guess. Some people enjoy getting ass-raped, that's why they keep coming back for more. I guess MS must have the $120GB HDD for kicks and giggles since it's not really needed:roll:. As for me, I have the best of both worlds. A BD-drive and a massive HDD that I bought and installed myself. And I would've gladly paid $400 for the PS3 if I didn't get it for about free. I would also get the XBOX considering almost every computing device in my home, including my phone, has an MS OS and software if it wasn't for the shitty hardware.

I take everything I previously said back. You guys are right--this is simply outrageous. I am never going to play my 360 again. I am going to spend every waking moment forming online protest groups, signing petitions, typing furiously to message boards, and leaving angry comments on the Major Nelson blog until this wrong is righted. My legs are wobbly, my rear is sore and I'm fresh out of lube. I'm not gonna take it anymore.

As a gamer, why should I waste time playing video games when I can engage in fruitless endeavors to stop Microsoft from creating animated boxes within a single row on my console's dashboard that I never look at and that subsequently has zero effect on my gaming habits? It's clear that I need to stop using the products and services that I enjoy so much in an effort, that will likely go unnoticed, to send a message to M$ that these minuscule changes are unacceptable.


Once this is accomplished, I will focus all of my efforts on Amazon.com to stop them from constantly bombarding me with products that I may be interested in on their front page every time I visit their site. I am a Prime subscriber and frequent shopper--I shouldn't have to put up with this nonsense!

Seriously, I logged into my gamertag this evening and had to force myself to scroll through the ads to see if any video ads would come up. None did. But the fact that I have to force myself to go to specific channels of the dashboard that I never go to anyways should show just how unobtrusive the ads are and how overblown the outrage is.

The price is right. But the console ends up being the blade. You have to spend extra $$$ for extra stuff. $199 will get you through the door but things quickly add up.
