Moving picture ads added to the 360 dash

Video Commercials w/ sound are starting to pop up on a couple of channels on the Live Dash like Getting Started and Inside Xbox.

There's a good bit of outrage going out over this but I'm failing to register any. Primarily because I've become so used to tuning out commercials over the years whether they be on TV, radio, web, or even the ads that were already on the 360, that I just don't get worked up about it. Whenever I log into my gamertag, I immediately flick up to go to My Xbox so I never notice ads.

As long as there are no jarring ads that invade the actual game space, I'm indifferent to it. I can even tolerate the 1 vs 100 ads as long as the game remains free to play for Gold members.

Yeah, I don't really care, either. If the next dashboard lets us start on "My Xbox", I'll be plenty happy.

Interesting. I'm not too upset either, if it tickles my fancy I'll stop and watch it, if not I'll just hit the "up" button and find something else.

I'm one that tends to agree gold members should at least have the option to start on the My Xbox channel instead, but I'm also one that doesn't get particularly upset about it either nor will this upset me

This needs to happen, especially for Gold members.

Being new to Live, I was surprised this wasn't in the options menu. I now have the "flick the stick" reflex built up too, as I always want to just go to My XBox when I first boot it up.

Much less annoying than the commercials in a movie theatre though :). On principle, I don't like commercials in any service I actually pay for though, but the ones on XBox Live are at least skipable...unlike the ones in a movie theater :|.

Am I the only one who thinks NXE was a huge mistake? Really the only reason I was looking forward to it was because it was supposed to be substantially faster, which it's not. The old interface displayed more information on the screen at one time. NXE is supposed to be better organized, but I don't really think it is. And the old interface allowed MS to display ads on the screen you see when you boot your Xbox without pissing people off (other than the people who thinks any ads at all are unacceptable). We all know they won't let you start on My Xbox because then you'd never see the ads. They created that problem with the NXE.

They tried to copy the XMB, but they did a horrible job. Not that the XMB is without flaws and deficiencies, but at least it's simple, fast and pretty well organized. I wish they'd go back to the old dash. There are definitely ways in which the old dash is better, and I'm not seeing many ways in which NXE is better.

I had no problem with the old 360 dash. In fact, I kind of preferred it. The only useful thing for me that came with NXE was the option to install games to the hard drive. The rest has been fluff.

i kind of agree. i very rarely use the actual dash. i always press the guide button to use the 'mini dash' instead.

what i do not understand is, now that i have SF4 on PC and it uses games for windows, is why the hell is the 'guide' on the PC SSSSOOOO much faster than on the xbox360?

the guide on GFW is lightyears faster than the 360 guide, and it is so much more fluid and smoother. makes me really wonder wtf is going on on 360.

I know that this is OT, but wouldn't that be the third copy of SF4 you own?

I haven't been on Live in a few days, but that sucks. I don't mind ads with motion, but I most certainly do not want audio. Fuck that.

yes :(

but hey, i get duplicate achievements on my gamerscores!

and fwiw, the online play on the PC is probably the best of all three, w/the 360 next, and the ps3 falling in a distant third (latency wise).

I believe you only hear the audio if you move to that ad. It doesn't just start automatically. You have to "highlight" it I think.

Meh, whatever. I spend 1% of my Xbox time on the dashboard. I don't really care what they do as long as it doesn't take my console 5 minutes to display what's stored on my HDD. That needs to be fixed.

I would be outraged if I *had* to watch an ad before starting a game or something like that. Loading Mass Effect... but first a word from our sponsors!

I don't really care about the ads, but I'll jump on the bandwagon of the NXE being dog slow. I hated the old dash because of it, and sometimes the NXE is even slower. If you're like me and have waited up to 15-20 seconds for your list of demos to show up, then you'd hate it to. :)

Please don't give them any crazy ideas! Who knows...a Microsoft/EA employee might be lurking on this board.

Bombarded is always the adjective people use with ads and I just don't think it fits. I mean, there's ads, but they aren't popping up all over the place and jumping out in front of you or anything. And to overuse an analogy - you pay for cable service but get "bombarded" with ads every 15 minutes.

As for the video ads on Live, I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I kind of like them. They aren't in the way or obtrusive or anything, they're clearly focused at the male gamer 18-25 demographic, and they take 0 time to load. I wouldn't mind if they made the "inside xbox" features they have as seamless - as those aren't much more than glorified ads, anyway.

Also, the audio doesn't kick in unless you highlight them.

Though I agree - I'd rather start on the My Xbox channel/tab/whatever it's called.

Well, as long as an ad with audio doesn't start playing when my 360 boots to the dash I guess I can live with them being there... though I would still prefer that they were muted unless I expressly selected otherwise.

Actually, I'd like them to cycle the audio once and then go mute. The most annoying thing about the PS3 dashboard, IMHO, is when it boots up to a game that has the whole icon jacket with sound. I'm treated to a short clip of PAIN's theme song OVER AND OVER AND OVER until I finally get going and off the icon.

Hah.. that's why I have my PS3 dash sorted into folders. That way all my downloaded games are in folders and aren't selected by default when the system boots.

I think it's pretty hilarious what people will put up with, just grin and bear it, justify it to themselves that, on top of the money they pay to be Gold members, they have to endure being bombarded (yes, bombarded, it was true before, and it's even more true now) by ad spamming.

"OMG, thank you Microsoft, you've "enhanced" my gaming experience!"
