Situation: Old computer running Win2k was hit by SUV that crashed through wall. Computer won't boot (power supply busted), but hard drive is just fine. I've copied everything over to a new computer (Win XP Home). I just need Outlook Express files copied (address book, old emails, ~ 100 folders that had all that email sorted for different people, etc).

I can see the Outlook Express files in the Documents and Settings folder of the old Win2K drive while doing a virus scan. Yet WinXP won't let me see the folders or files on the drive. By clicking on properties I see there are ~200 MB of files there, but I cannot see them (even with 'show all files' selected).

How do I get them copied into Outlook Express on the new computer?

You mean you've unchecked "hide protected and system files?"

Ideally, you'd put the old drive in the new computer and do an Export Messages to Outlook or something like that. I know there's a way to directly copy OE mailboxes, just can't recall what it is.

I don't understand why you didn't just replace the PSU if that's all that busted.

Well the motherboard is also possibly bad (cracked from wreck as well). It was a 1 GHz Celeron with 128 MB RAM, cracked motherboard, bad power supply, case is severly dented in, power button busted, etc. It wasn't worth the money to repair it when a new computer for $399 is over double the speed, double the memory, double the HD space, etc.

Yes I mean the 'hide protected and system files' is unchecked.

Do I have to first load the old Outlook somehow and export it, or can I just import it directly from the new Outlook?

This site has all the info you need

Pay attention to the "Where are my OE message files stored" FAQ. You'll have to recreate your mail accounts in the new OE, but importing messages and folders from the OE "Store" in your old drive will bring messages and folders over just the way they were.

Thanks, I think that got all of the emails. I'll know tomorrow if I get a panicked call that the email isn't working...
