Moving out -- Futon???

What's up.

I'm moving out very soon and was thinking of getting a futon as my bed, since my place is a studio. People say that I'll never fold it back up to a couch, but whatever, i'd rather have an option. People have also said that I should be careful and "not buy a cheap one, i'd regret it" anyone have a good idea on what a good fouton is? I really don't mind spending a lot of money, because I'll spend approximately 1/3 of my time on it (more if im lucky )

EDIT: Would it be wise to buy a futon frame on Craigslist and a nice mattress.. or should I buy the whole thing new?

Yes, if you are going to be in a studio, a futon is a must. To be sure, mine was in the "bed" position 90% of the time, but it was that 10% of the time when I had some people over and they could sit on a couch to watch a movie instead of a bed that made it worthwhile.

(Cheap as in low quality, You can probably find a good quality one for a good price, just shop around and be mindful of the quality)

"People" are idiots. To punish them just get a bed, then when they come over and have to sit on it, tell them if you had a futon you wouldn't fold it for them anyway.

Get one with a sturdy frame, you can tell by looking at the floor model, since these are usually abused a bit by the patrons of the store. I have a very solid one with a metal frame, very smooth transition from couch-> bed and back, though I have seen some decent wooden ones. This one has served me well for 4+ years as a couch in my room/spare bed.

Also, get one with an 8" mattress, the ones with the flimsy 4" ones are not comfy once they are worn in.

shop around a bit, you will easily see the quality differences.

a good futon = one made of wood completely with a thick cotton fill mattress, around 500-1000 dolllars.

a bad futon = steel with synthetic fill mattress, ie walmart, target, etc, around 200-300 dollars.

Make sure the frame that you get is sturdy, and definitely invest in a good mattress. I think we have a 10" foam mattress that's a million times better than the cheap ones that come with a futon in a Target or wherever. We also noticed that even with the nice mattress, you can still feel the bars underneath, so putting some cardboard between the frame and the mattress is a good idea.

If you have a futon that has a fairly narrow base (which I imagine most do - example), it *will* tip over if you try to have sex on it, or if you happen to roll over in your sleep towards one edge.

i've moved recently and because we had 2 futons at work they gave me one and i've been using it (steel frame) it's cozy enough but i can't imagine hooking up in it.. not that that's a problem </geek angst>

When I saw this thread I read the word "futon" out loud, and threw up. It was like: fut-BLARGHATH. Don't do this, for God's sake. Now I have to clean little chunks of goo out of my keyboard.

ikea seems to have lots of sofa beds/ futons.

how interesting, why do you say you can't imagine having sex in it? two small? or two flimsy and wobbly?

Ikea sells some outstanding futon mattresses. I love mine. I use it as a couch 99% of the time, but occasionally will open it up to lay down while watching movies.
